This trap definitely works as advertised! You will see how well every time you empty the basket.
I was more than a little skeptical when I first heard about the DynaTrap on a radio Garden show that claimed it can cover 1/2 to 1 acre of property, but I have trusted the shows host on a number of things so I ordered it through Amazon. It took several weeks to arrive, as they were backlogged with orders as I am sure they are each Spring to Summer. The trap feels very light so you won't have to worry about a heavy or large hook to hang it. I installed it on the far edge of the patio but still under cover. I did not want the rain to soak it or the sun's UV rays to degrade it. I am a little concerned about the operating life, being left on 24/7. So far so good. I have had it operating for a month now and I am really pleased that it is so quiet. How it works: The light stay on continually and attracts flying insects day and night! When the insects get close, the fan underneath the light pulls them through the grate and traps them in the basket below. I have seen all different sizes of insects in the trap. Problems: I have only had one problem with the trap. I came out one day last week and the light was on but the fan was not turning. I unplugged the cord and found that a rather large June Bug was caught between the fan and the grate below it. These tough little bugs seem like they are made of a hard plastic and and this one was too big to make it trough the grate and was wedged in there, stopping the fan blade. I was think that perhaps this could have burned up the electric fan motor but after removing the bug and plugging it back in, it worked just fine. Apparently they anticipated this happening in the motor design. Nice job Dyna Trap! Operation: I empty the trap about twice a week and estimate that there is about one full cup of bugs inside. Some of the bugs that were apparently caught recently were still alive in the basket so I keep a can of bug killer close by and spray the bugs after I dump them out. (No since letting them take off and bother us again.) I probably should empty it more often because you can detect a slight odor from the dead bugs if you leave them in there too long. (Just a suggestion) Although I did not notice the smell from the patio because the fan blowing over them disperses the smell. Just the same, you may want to empty it more often. I am please with the quiet operation and clearly effective way it works, and have noticed a REAL difference sitting outside!. My backyard is about 1/2 acre and I still occasionally notice a fly by, but I'm not bothered like before. Even when I go out at night with a flashlight, I am not attacked by swarms of bugs. It has made a difference that is noticeable!

Very effective mosquito control without harming the birds!
Mosquitoes don't like the taste of my blood, but they love my children's blood! And the porch seemed to attract and hold the little devils night and day. My daughter came to visit, and she smokes on the porch. Big problem. I don't like to use pesticides because I feed and house as many birds as I can attract. I bought this item, along with an attractant pouch. Man, did it work great!! I brought it inside for the winter, but that sucker will be back on the porch any day now. You would not believe how many dead mosquitoes were in the bottom of this thing!! And it is quiet, unlike the old zappers we used to have, back in the day. The mosquitoes die, but you don't have to listen to their execution. And my lizards are amazed and fascinated. Mosquito buffet!

Traps a lot of bugs of all types, but screen is not fine enough to trap small bugs like no-see-ums

Quiet, effective backyard trap — really works!
We’ve had the DynaTrap running in our backyard for a while now, and while it doesn’t zap bugs, it definitely works. The UV light plus CO₂ mimic brings backyard pests straight into the catch basket, and the fan quietly traps them inside until they dehydrate and die. I mostly see moths, gnats, and flies in there—though a few mosquitoes too—but it’s made a noticeable difference in bug activity around our outdoor area. Setup was super simple—just plug it in and let it run. It’s whisper-quiet and looks more like a decorative lantern than a trap. It’s been surprisingly low-maintenance too; a quick emptying every few weeks keeps it working well. Once I realized bugs don’t get zapped but dehydrate, I started emptying the basket with a plastic bag around it—fewer escapees that way. All in all, it’s a solid, discreet way to reduce flying pests—worth it if you prefer quiet and easy over flashy zapper action.

If you had a Dynatrap XL then don't buy this you will be disappointed.
If you have the original Dynatrap XL and then get this as a replacement you will hate it. The original had great fan sucking power and WORKED! It lasted 5 years with only needing lamps. The Ballast finally wore out so only one lamp would work. So I purchased this new Pice of Junk!! Save you money, it is garbage. Another company that is cheapening its products to increase the bottom line. The LED lamp is not as effective as the older flouecent tube at attracting insects. The fan is TOTAL garbage with LOW sucking power. It not a good unit. save your money.

Good and catches a lot of bugs! Hasn’t reduced mosquitoes though
Catching a lot of bugs, but not really attracting mosquitoes. We were really hoping it would help our mosquito problem

An effective solution to a mosquito that doesn't require spraying insecticide.
I bought the half acresize and installed it in our back ysrd where we have a summer and lots of rain favorable to mosquito breeding. It works as advertised when i checked it the next morning there was about 3/4ths of a inch of insect debris in the bottom of the unit. Lots of mosquito and, surprisingly a lot of ground moths as well. When I saw that I wondered if the Dynatrap would work inside our home as well. Last year we had a problem with closet moths that seemingly enjoyed unimpeded breeding while feasting on the wool rug in our bedroom. In the past, we have sprayed, put out paper moth traps, carefully looked for moth egg cases and were still surprised when the moths kept popping up. On the first day we found nine moths in the trap, on the next day a couple of new additions and then none. That said, the trap isn’t foolproof. A few days later during another summer-in-Alabama rain storm, we had a power outage that lasted a few hours. This resulted in several of the previously trapped moths escaping out of the trap flying past the then immobile fan blade that had previously sucked them into the trap. That is a type of problem that would not likely be frequently experienced but adding a rechargeable back-up battery to the trap to maintain continuous suction would be a nice improvement in future versions.
