This eloquent examination of Inness' most important paintings illuminates the artist’s philosophical and religious preoccupations. It provides an overview of his life and situates Inness within the contexts of key issues in American history, such as the Hudson River School, Transcendentalism, Swedenborgianism, and the work of William James. It explains for the first time how Inness treated landscape painting as a form of philosophical inquiry that could communicate his holistic belief in the unity of nature and spirit. “Bell’s handsomely illustrated, eloquently written, and well-documented text considerably expands previous scholarship. ..[A] first-rate study. Highly recommended.” (Choice) Review: A beautifully written, thoughtful study of the life and work ... - A beautifully written, thoughtful study of the life and work of American tonalist painter George Inness. Adrienne Baxter Bell's attention to the spiritual implications of Inness' work alone make this book necessary reading to anyone interested in American art. Miss Bell expounds on Iness' interest in Swedenborgianism as well as similar spiritual trends affecting nineteenth century artists. A selection of gorgeous, faithfully reproduced images throughout, one can tell that no expense was spared in the printing of this book. The beauty of the images is perfectly complimented by the author's expertise on this master, which is reflected in her eloquent writing and thorough, meticulous research on the subject. This wonderful book on Inness will easily become the prized centerpiece in any collection of art monographs. I highly recommend this book.

Bought as a gift.
Bought this book simply because George Inness is a distant relative we’ve just discovered and coming from UK hadn’t heard of him or his works. The book arrived well packaged and in perfect condition. It’s hardcover and the corners were crisp. No creases in the outer cover. Inside short history section followed by pages of his paintings, looks great on bookshelf good for reference or ideas. The book was gifted to my daughter who loved it.

George Inness and the Visionary Landscape
This is an outstanding treatment of George Inness, his painting, especially the later landscapes, and his philosophy of what he was trying to portray in his unique style. Well written and thoroughly researched by Adrienne Baxter, this book makes it easy to understand and fully appreciate the works of this artist.
