The Gongs are bronze. An alloy of 80% copper and 20% tin. Handmade with ancient Chinese tradition at a Gong forge. The sound pattern of the Chau Gong unfolds in a powerful and dynamic way and produces a wide range of overtones. Depending on the way of striking the instrument, you can produce a wide variety of different sound results. When struck strongly, the result is a rumbling bass, when struck lightly, you can produce buzzing overtones. The Gong is an ancient cultural symbol of China. Each Gong is a work of art and of excellent craftmanship and the results are unique. The bigger the Gong the more impressive the resulting sound that can be produced by different techniques (tempo, striking power, rhythm, muffling etc.) Also different sticks can influence the sound. Chau Gongs are popular with rock bands, musicians, orchestras and sound therapists. The sound can be grounding. The earliest Chau Gong is from a tomb discovered at the Guixian site in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China. It dates from the early Western Han Dinasty. They were known for their very intense and spiritual drumming in rituals and tribal meetings. The 24" Gong come with a square stand (adjustable 42"-53") or a circular stand, a bag and a mallet.
