It does work on round and square pipes
We bought this for our square downpipes to set up a water butt at our new home. We have instead used it to divert water off by a system of pipes from the conservatory downpipe to our garden pond. The pond had dried up because we have had such little rain this spring and up to now. The weather forecast said that rain was due that night, so we quickly cut the downpipe and inserted this into place. At first it looked like it only would fit a round pipe, but it does fit square pipes too. We attached the flexible hose to our pipes which ran at an angle and then along the back of the borders to the pond. We tested it with a watering can and was pleased that it worked. We didn't get as much rain as forecast that night, but for what rain we did get [not a lot], it diverted a good deal that came off the conservatory roof. I can see that this product will be useful for this and that we will probably buy another for the water butt[s].

Straight forward - simple
This is one of the better designed water diverters as it has a ring around the pipe that will allow dead leaves to be removed when necessary. Fitting is easy although the instructions could have been a bit clearer on the height where the down pipe needs to be cut.Good value for money as the various garden centers would gladly rip you off for the double price without battering an eyelid. 4.5 out of five really.

Easy to fit
Straightforward to install but could have done with a longer hose, I had to extend the hose that was supplied. Other than that it works well.

easy to install, work as advertised
The water diverter was a reasonable price, arrived within a few days of ordering and was easy to install. I ordered 2 and installed each of them for 2 barrels on separate downspouts. I used a small fine tooth saw to cut each of the downspout pipes, then drilled a hole in each barrel near the top with a cordless drill, inserted and tightened the plastic pipe adapter and attached the flex hose between the diverter and barrel. It rained the next day and both rain barrels were full...great!

Cheap and nasty
This item is of very poor quality, if you need this sort of thing you would be better off paying a little extra.

not what I ordered!
The item I ordered did not match the image. I received a fitting that was circular, not square, as the image.

Not great quality
Our diverter hose split, so I needed a new one, and checked out the reviews on here.I decided to buy this one, it was a bit more expensive but it got better reviews. I should have just gone with cheap. The hose is quite brittle compared with our previous one, and when we fitted it, the ends started to split - we were careful and the device was not at all mishandled. It's fitted, it works, but I am not convinced it will last very long.Edited in 2015: Despite the bad start, this kit lasted three years with no problem. It may be working still, but we sold the house so I have no way of knowing. So I am upgrading it from 3 stars to 4.

Best of the bunch
This is an excellent device. I have three water butts, and installed three different diverters over a few months (I bought the cheapest each time!). This was the easiest one to fit - it's always a bit fiddly getting the level right! - the best looking, and the only one that was entirely trouble-free.Now buying another to replace the cheapest one which has always leaked a little through a poorly moulded connection. Not the cheapest, but the best, and only a quid or two more. It can be adapted for square down pipes, but you'd do better to buy the square-looking one.
