Prepac Narrow Cabinet Media Storage, Slim Barrister Tower, Black

I like this particular rack for several reasons. Firstly, I like that many of my CD's are now at or near eye level due to its height. Even though it is just made of pressed wood, the construction and materials are of very good quality. Fit and finish are impressive. Assembly was a little complex, but there were no difficulties or parts that were missing or didn't fit. Directions were clear and well illustrated. It is well balanced, and will not need to be anchored to the wall thanks to the fairly wide base. I could have paid a little more for the one w/ the cherry finish, but the black finish looks just fine, and I saved some cash that way. I am probably going to buy a second one to hold my DVD's and some old VCR's. The only drawback to this unit, as others have maybe mentioned, is that the moldings on the sides make a couple of CD's difficult to access on each shelf. I solved this by putting some empty cases in these recesses. The unit holds a few less filled CD cases this way, but that is hardly a deal breaker. Overall, a handsome and very welcome answer to my CD clutter!

Good media stand. Durable and holds quite a lot of DVDs which is why I got it. Looks nice and was easy to set up. Only gripe is box showed up damaged and the unit was scuffed up a bit, but luckily in places that ended up concealed.

These are excellent shelving units for storing CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays and VHS Tapes. They seem to be constructed very well and are fairly easy to put together as long as the directions are followed. If you have a lot of media to store (like I did) you will save yourself a lot of time if you plan how you're going to store your media before you start loading the shelves. The shelves have a trim piece that goes along the front edge of each side of the unit. These trim pieces somewhat limit the storage on each shelf as you can't get discs out of the corner unless you remove a disc somewhere in the middle of the shelf. That being said, here's my info and advice. The horizontal clear opening of each shelf is about 15 5/8". Each shelf holds approx. 40 CDs, 27 DVDs or Blu-Rays, or 15 VHS Tapes without having to put any behind the edge trim. Measure the linear inches of all of your media before you start loading the shelves then divide by the clear dimension. That will give you some idea as to how many shelves you'll need to store all of your media. I ended up having to buy two of these because of a door and light switch location that limited my wall space. The vertical clear opening is about 60 5/8". The dimension between each shelf for DVDs, Blu-Rays discs, and VHS tapes will be approx. 8 7/8" from top of shelf to top of shelf when the shelves are installed on the pins that are inserted into the sides of the unit. For CDs that dimension is approx. 6 1/4". If you set the shelves up like I did (VHS tapes on the bottom, CDs next, then DVDs and Blu-Rays on top you probably won't get all 9 shelves into the unit that come with it. I ended up getting 7 shelves into each unit and had to use one of the shelves to store DVDs on their sides. With my purchase of two of these units I chose to file my media in alphabetical order across the two units. That being said, I left some space on each shelf to add media as I go so I don't have to jockey too many discs are around when I add a disc to my collection. That allowed me to place some small display items on some of those shelves which adds to the look of the shelves.

I spent a lot of time researching and trying to find the perfect CD rack. This one is pretty good. I believe it will hold around 360 CDs on the bottom 9 racks (around 40 per shelf), and an additional 30 or so on the top rack if you stack them horizontally. This piece does have a design flaw in my opinion with that top rack. The top moulding comes down too far and you wouldn't be able to get to any CDs you would place there vertically, unless you left lots of room. You CAN leave off that piece of top moulding, and if you were handy you could paint the bare wood black to match or cut down that top piece of moulding to make it give you more room. I haven't decided what I'll do yet. I have some large box set pieces that I think I'll put there to use the space. You could put DVDs or cassettes or knick knacks or whatever else. It just won't fit a CD vertically and able to pull it out straight with that piece of moulding on. Also another small problem is the side mouldings obscure about 2 CDs on either side. I plan to just put empty jewel cases there to take up space. You could put a little piece of cardboard or something else. It's not a huge problem for me since I'm not taking up every inch of space (yet). It does come with a wall anchor so you can anchor it to the wall, and the bottom piece is longer in the front to make it nice and stable. The color is a rich black and it arrived perfect with no dings or scratches. The only other small gripe I have is that the back plate is a tad too small to fit to be able to put the nails in the way it describes. What I did is I centered it perfectly on the back of the piece while it laid face down on my floor and I taped it in place. That way when I nailed it on the veeeeeery edge of the back plate, it stayed in place and didn't move. It comes with a black marker to fix any dings I guess, but I didn't need it. I'm including a photo with a CD in the top shelf so you can see how much room is taken away from you. I hope you enjoy it!

Storage cabinets for CD’s, DVD’s and VHS tapes are becoming as obsolete as the media they are meant to store, no company wants to make the investment to design anything worthwhile so virtually everything being sold is junk. Including this one. The big difference is that most of the others sell for about $45 bucks, which is about what they are worth. This one’s price is in the stratosphere and before you read another word, take my advice, it’s not worth it. I bought it for one reason, I have a lot of audio and video recordings on those obsolete formats and they are scattered all over the house. Almost every cabinet that holds a large quantity of media is low profile so it takes up a lot of floor space, which is at a premium in my house. This one is unusually tall and has a unique width that fits exactly between my closet door and the corner of the room. That is the one and only reason I kept it. If you are still considering this product, then at least read the following information and tips so you know what you are getting in for. TIP 1 When I am shopping for something I start with the one star reviews, they are usually the most informative about what’s wrong with a product and least likely to be bogus reviews placed by the seller or people who got free samples. Here’s what you will find in those low rating reviews. That they (a Canadian company, not Chinese) are careless to the point of irresponsibility in prepping it to get to you – everything is carelessly tossed inside with no protection other than a white foam that is carelessly sprayed all over the parts themselves. It absolutely does not come off no matter what I’ve tried, if you care at all about how the finished cabinet looks you will be disappointed, the ugly white foam covers many of the parts that show. TIP 2 Like most cheap RTA (ready to assemble) furniture this is made from MDA which is a way of hiding the fact that it is compressed sawdust covered with an extremely thin vinyl. There are actually some fairly nice products made from MDA, this isn’t one of them, it is the lowest grade like you would find at the dollar store. Except this costs many dollars, it is unbelievably overpriced. Compared to other products this should sell for no more than forty-five bucks at the most. TIP 3 Unlike most Chinese-made furniture that is usually precisely sized this looks like someone made it in their back yard after a few beers. Those useless front trim pieces that so many complain about because they make CD/DVD cases at either end impossible to access are about an eighth of an inch too long. I had to cut them with a hacksaw. No one who buys a cabinet that costs this much should have to correct pieces that are made incorrectly. IF you aren’t handy with shop tools, do not buy this cabinet. TIP 4 The flimsy piece of cardboard they call a back panel is too small. If you nail it on like you would on similar cabinets the tall sides are pulled in too much which results in the shelves not fitting. The instructions don’t say a word about this. The guy who made this could have avoided this problem if he had just put a fixed shelf mid-way between the top and bottom. SOLUTION: and this is a must – before you start to nail the back on install two shelves, one 8 peg holes down from the top and one 8 peg holes up from the bottom. That will spread the sides enough while you attach the cardboard back so you can then install (and adjust) the rest of the shelves. And by the way, they use the absolute cheapest aluminum nails that bend at the slightest tap. TIP 5 This is another must-do. I recommend never assembling any RTA furniture without using a good grade of wood glue. You will never end up with a serviceable item if you don’t. And it is especially true with something like this that uses absolutely no bracing of any kind. Glue every wood-to-wood surface except the shelves of course. TIP 6 I have never seen any company include a black felt marker for you to touch up their mistakes. And you will need it. Fortunately it matches close enough to cover places where the thin vinyl is scratched or marred. YES OR NO As I said I didn’t return this because it fits the space I have available and it’s not in a location where looking good is that important to me. After it was assembled, with me correcting their mistakes, it holds my remaining library of CD’s, DVD’s and VHS tapes. I can’t recommend it for all of the reasons covered above but most of all because it is unbelievably shoddy for the price which is way too high.

I love this item so much and I am very happy that I purchased this item even though it wasn't what I had in mind.I was looking for a rack to hold my video games, but I also wanted it to look elegant and not cheaply made. This product is very well made and very beautiful, from the minute you walk into my living room you notice it. Best part is that it comes with interchangeable shelves that does not damage the design of the product. So you will be able to place what ever you like regardless the size and length. I read many reviews on this item before purchasing it and i have to agree with some of the things that was said. 1. It is very heavy, and huge! Its taller then me and I am a 5'4 female. 2. I notice in the reviews that a lot of people claim some of the shelves was not fully covered with the black paint. So I was prepared for that to be one of the problems I will have to face, but to my surprised that issued never occurred. It was completely covered with fresh paint, it had no marks or any white spots as mentioned so I am assuming that they took into consideration what the other customers was complaining about. 3. The instructions was not as easy to understand as I had hoped but they made sure to remind you to check if you received all the pieces before proceeding to put it together and if any was missing they had given you a number to contact. I really liked how they was willing to be so helpful, but I am also glad that I didn't need to call them. 4. Now this was almost a deal breaker; I purchase this item thinking it was meant to hold video games like a DVD rack but I to my surprise it was more like a book case. After building it and seeing how wonderfully it compliments the rest of my furniture plus the fact that I was able to change the shelves to what ever size I needed so that my games and limited/special edition cases can fit perfectly is what convinced me to keep it. 5. Also it is build to last!!! Besides that I honestly believe that this is an amazing product for that cheap price and once i get paid again i do plan on buying another one!

Serious problems with this unit. First of all, there is a lip on each side of the frame, about the with of a standard CD jewel case, which means that the first CD on each shelf disappears if pushed flush with the side. My solution has been to put empty jewel cases at the end of each shelf, so that I can see all the spines. There is also a lintel at the top of the unit which prevents one from using the full height of the top shelf. Since I purchased the unit specifically for CD storage, I can't use it to maximum efficiency. Not surprisingly, a tall shelf like this is potentially top-heavy. The unit comes with an anchor device for securing the top to the wall. However, the quality of the pressboard side panel was so shoddy that the mounting screw pulled out. Solution: use an angle iron on top of the shelf to secure it to the wall. On the plus side, it's a good-looking unit and the assembly instructions are clear. All necessary hardware was supplied. But I'm unlikely to purchase this brand again.

The tower holds the number of CDs advertised, it looks good, and it is easy to construct. The drawback to the tower is the unnecessary decorative panels on the inside top of the tower and on its facing sides. What the top panel does is block the insertion of CDs on the top row. What the side panels do is block the insertion and cover up CDs on all the rows. So you can't see the CDs on the ends of each row. They are covered up by these panels. To insert these end CD's into the row, you first have to remove CDs from the center of the row to make room for these end CDs, then replace the center CDs. I removed the top panel easily enough, but the side panels are a different story. They are attached on to the tower's frame by pegs inserted into both the panel and the frame. Why not avoid adding the panels? Because otherwise you are left with the unpainted frames with eight peg holes. You can fill the holes and paint the frames, but be aware this is what you have to do to make the tower presentable.

Un bon deal car acheté d'occasion pour cause de défauts cosmétiques alors qu'en fait c'est quasi imperceptible. Sinon je ne sais pas si je l'aurais acheté le plein prix. Pas compliqué à monter, juste un peu long. J'ai eu peur en clouant le fond de taper "à coté" et que ça se voit sur l'endroit car le fond est un peu plus petit que les rebords où il doit être cloué, faut vraiment y faire attention. J'ai eu du mal à bien insérer les barres latérales, à faire en sorte que les chevilles en plastique soient bien enfoncées dans les deux parties du meuble. A part ça, pas mal d'espace de stockage de CD et DVD. Je ne sais pas si c'est robuste, on verra avec le temps, mais ça a l'air assez solide, et également stable (je ne l'ai pas fixé au mur) une fois bien remplie. Le seul truc potentiellement gênant, ce sont les rebords sur les cotés et en hauts, qui cache un peu les CD/DVD, mais c'est vraiment mineur.

It's a nice looking bookcase but one crucial design flaw to it is that the side panels that give it a finished look also blocks a full movie on either side and in order to get the movies hidden out you need to pull another movie out first to move everything over. Why design a bookcase that can be used for movies but make it so it covers over two movies on each shelf. I had plans to get more of these but seeing the first one I built, I'm going to look for something else

There are not too many options left for CD racks, so it is good that a Canadian company provides a quality choice that looks good as well. I will buy another tower from them for more storage soon. Pros - Looks great - Holds a lot of CDs in a small footprint - Good assembly instructions To be improved - It seems like my flat pack box was packed next to a running table saw with no dust venting. Wow. I have never seen so much sawdust in a flat pack box. I had to wipe and clean everything about 5 times during assembly (needed two rags on-the-go for this). Prepac should look at their boxing process and ensure pieces/edges are quickly vacuumed before packing. - the cable tie mounting is not a good idea. It neither provides fixed support (no movement), nor flush mounting to wall. Also, not all installations will have free space on either side of the tower, and in such cases it is very hard to get the cable tie secured in a tight space. I installed it, but it is not an acceptable solution, so I will remove the cable tie mount and use a standard l-bracket from my own tool box.

This unit arrived in great condition. There was even a touch up pen included but we didn't need it. It went together very easily with clear instructions. We had the finished product on carpet. With nothing in it we found it to be a bit tippy front and back but would have expected that. We did not use the hardware provided to attach the unit to the wall but did put a screw through the backing, through a 1/4 inch wood spacer and into the anchor provided with the hardware. Worded great and the unit is very stable now. The DVD's fit perfectly with 3 shelves left over and I was pleasantly surprised at how much it could hold. Very happy with this purchase. Just as advertised and looks great.

Packaging was fine but boards were broken inside. Returning was a major pain as the box is too big for most purolator/canada post drop off points. Had to schedule a special pickup during my work hours.
