TerraMaster D5 Thunderbolt 3 Professional-Grade 5-Bay External Hard Drive Enclosure RAID 0/RAID1/RAID5/RAID10 Hard Disk RAID Storage (Diskless)

I have this set up as raid 0 for bays 1 and 2 and single discs for the other 3. Using a couple of WD Red Pro disks in in the raid 0 configuration as my FCPX library working drive, and attached via Thunderbolt 3, this set up allows me to edit in 4k in real time, with no stuttering or lags, even when applying complex effects. I use the other 3 bays for original media and back up, so I have everything in one package. The set up was very easy, no special skills required. I cannot comment on the longevity of the system of course as it has only been running for a few weeks, but I suspect it would be the disks themselves (bought separately), that are the possible failure points. But as long as a proper backup system is used, there will be no problems. I hope this is useful for others wishing to use this for intensive video editing. If you are only editing in HD, then the cheaper USB C version of this would be more than adequate, as it is the disks themselves that are the speed limiting factor (unless you use SSDs), or if you were using 4K but happy to use proxy media.

Tried to get it to run. Installed, transferred all my stuff. Worked well under Catalina. Then installed Big Sur. Reboots with a scream every 20 minutes. TerraMaster admit to not having tested it on the grounds that "For a direct attached storage, you just need to make sure your computer support the Thunderbolt 3 interface and follow the Thunderbolt 3 protocol, no matter PC or MAC. that’s closed related to computer hardware instead of OS. Compare to the OS, the model number is more critical issue you need to concern before you purchase your device. That’s why the OS update testing is not an hurry issue from our plan." The criticality of the model number remains unexplained in any publicly-available documentation.At some point they may test against Big Sur: "As the team got a long working list, but after an internal discussion, I am sucessful to convince the product team to give the Big Sur test better priority. But that's going to take some time, I will keep you update."Possibly.

I wanted to come and say its brilliant and I have no concerns. Not quite how it is, after only a month od use I have had a worrying Drive failure and to be honest my confidence in this unit has taken a hit. Service response via email and chat has not really got to a conclusion I think returns my confidence.The initial setup with 5 x Seagate Ironwolf Pro 8TB drive went without issue. Setup as RAID 5 (4 data + 1 for parity - no spare). The transfer of my photos took a reasonably quick time from the other drives I was using and again there were no incidents. The 32TB capacity was then sitting around 25TB.Initial Blackmagic speed tests were good, and then dropped as the drive became fuller.Issue was after a trip away for 10 days I came back with my Mac Studio offline and the alarm on the Terramaster. There was also a orange led next to the D1 position. I tried restarting and also used the RAID Manage Pro app to see what the event log said, and it said the D1 had failed and the attempts to rebuild got 1 or 2% complete and then failed again. Support got the logs and other data and suggested I replace the faulty drive. I didn't have another so I had to buy another. On replacing that a few days later it failed to rebuild with the new drive. After multiple attempts and, at the time, no support answering chat, I decided to return the original HDD to then see it start the rebuild again and, for some reason, complete. I now have the array back running with no errors, but it leaves me worried it may happen again, and I am still not wiser about whether it was the Raid Array issue or a Seagte drive issue. I also now have a new, just opened, 8TB drive I didn't need, or do I?So, the unit looks good, and when it works, it's good, but the reliability of a month-old product in charge of protecting precious files is not where I wanted it to be. Approach this unit cautiously, and if your files are that important to you, perhaps look elsewhere.

Bought this unit as a replacement for a Drobo 5D (Drobo gone out of business), as it is a RAID 5 unit and directly attached to my Mac with a Thunderbolt 3 connection. Very happy with unit, internal drives insert very easily and make a solid connection. Only issue is that the driver software for the unit was a bit difficult to install and didn't work straight off on my Mac running the latest OS but fixed in the end, hence the one lower rating.

Solid storage solution. Well built like other units from Terramaster line up.This is in fact the fastest direct attached unit that i have used so far reaching 800 MB/S on Reads and Writes. I used a Thunderbolt 2 computer so probably with a T3 device i can get a little bit more out of it.Also tested the daisy chain feature and works nice, i can connect my 4K display over the display port or even trough the thunderbolt 3 port to my 4K USB-C display (LG27UD88W)Really happy with this unit.

Very disappointed with the TerraMaster D5 Thunderbolt 3. It does not work with a NAS (to backup the NAS). I accept that I could have done a better job of researching its use with NAS and thunderbolt 3.However, to make it worst, there is no easy way of making it work directly with Apple MacBook Pro 16in M1 Max.I am writing off the cost of the TerraMaster D5 Thunderbolt 3 and having to decide what to do with 5x 16TB disks (6x including a 16TB backup disk), that cannot be used as a result.I cannot blame TerraMaster, other than to say, they could make incompatibility issues between NAS and DAS, more clearly.Make no mistake, I will not buy TerraMaster in the future.

I purchased this item a month ago to upgrade my hot storage for my photo library. I'm a professional photographer and I am already on my second rebuild of the RAID 5 array I've set up. I have 4 12TB WD Red drives installed, with 36TB of available space. Performance is excellent, and it makes a big difference to my Lightroom/Photoshop workflow for mass-editing work for clients.When my MacBook Pro (2018) goes into suspend, the D5 simply doesn't like it. On resume, the first disk fails to spin up and causes the TerraMaster to beep violently. Opening RAID Manager Pro, the RAID array is in a 'critical' state and needs to rebuild - checking the SHI, all of the disks' SMART status is fine, so it is a problem with the enclosure.The first time it happened, the rebuild took nearly 3 days, which is 3 days when I can't deliver work to clients. Worse still, I then had to move all of my data off the array as MacOS refused to write to it once it had completed. This meant starting from scratch again.With storage, the one thing I need above anything else is stability. RAID is not a backup - I have BackBlaze, Dropbox and a NAS for that. The second most important thing is performance. It delivers on the second, but the enclosure just isn't stable enough if in the space of a month I've had to rebuild my array twice because the unit is unable to reliably sleep and wake up the drives (which are on the compatibility list, I might add).

Ich habe mein D5 Gehäuse schnell bekommen und installiert. Leider konnte ich die Platten nicht ansteuern und kein RAID erstellen, da der RAID Manager keine Verbindung herstellen konnte. Der Support aus China hat sofort und sehr umfangreich reagiert. Selbst per Teamviewer wurde nach einer Lösung gesucht. Als sich rausstellte, dass es wohl ein Hardware Problem ist, bekam ich sofort ein neues Austauschgerät und alle Kosten würden übernommen. So stelle ich mir einen professionellen Support vor. Zum Gerät kann ich bis jetzt noch wenig sagen, die Geschwindigkeiten sind wie angegeben von mir gemessen worden, zu einer endgültigen Meinung braut es aber eine Langzeitbeobachtung.

Peccato non supporti l'ultimo sistema operativo della Apple ne il nuovi Mac con processore M1. L'assistenza tecnica da Dicembre 2020 dice che stanno lavorando al nuovo driver, ma il kit di sviluppo è in giro da oltre un anno per gli sviluppatori. Per un dispositivo che dovrebbe garantire la sicurezza di terabyte di dati.. un supporto tecnico del genere lascia molto a desiderare... visto anche il prezzo esagerato.Non sprecato il vostro tempo e soldi con questa azienda.Aggiornamento recensione al 28 Gen. 2022.Dopo quasi un anno di utilizzo di questo fin troppo costoso articolo, confermo il mancato supporto a clienti Apple M1... driver e client sono fermi alla prima versione ed una volta su due che faccio un aggiornamento , seppur minimo , ad OSX, bisogna reinstallare ex.novo driver e client.. assurdo !!La velocità di UP/DOWNLOAD non è tanto diversa da quella che avevo con un precedente NAS via Ethernet.. 80-120 MB/s dipende dal numero e dimensioni dei file transferiti, con la significativa differenza che il precedente NAS aveva 4 HD in RAID 5... questo invece ne ha 5 sempre in RAID 5 (stessa marca e modello). Potessi tornare indietro non lo comprerei.Dopo quasi 4 anni di utilizzo, ho scoperto di avere uno dei 5 HD in fault.... 1) in nessuna maniera l'oggetto in questione e relativo software mi ha avvisato. 2) anche andando nella loro raccapricciante web app, non era per nulla chiaro che uno dei 5 HD era andato !!! e comunque non sono riuscito a capire QUALE dei 5 aveva malfunzionamenti, l'ho dedotto guardando i dati S.M.A.R.T... quini ho passato non so quanto tempo col rischio di perdere tutti i dati se si fosse rotto anche un secondo HD. Non si possono affidare 18 TB di dati ad un "aggeggio" del genere. E non è finita, ho comprato un nuovo hard disk per rimpiazzare il vecchio... non c'è stato verso di sostituire il vecchio danneggiato col nuovo.. SENZA perdere i dati, non ne voleva sapere di ripristinare il RAID 5, sono stato costretto a resettare tutto, ricreare da zero il RAID 5 e ritrasferire dal backup (che ho su un altro PC) 18 TB di dati alla fantastica velocità di 80-120 MB/s !!!Mi sono rotto veramente le scatole di sto affare.. torno alla concorrenza con la Q (che costa meno di un terzo) e mai piu Terramaster !!!

Me gasté unos 1700€ entre la unidad D5-Thunderbolt y los discos duros precisamente para estar tranquilo con la información. La configuré la unidad en RAID 5, para que si fallaba un disco, no tener problema en recuperar la información y sin ninguna razón ha fallado por completo. Llevo varios días intentando recuperar todo su contenido con un programa de terceros.
