It is 1984. Frank (Layke Anderson) is a determined teenager who runs away from high school to find an alternative lifestyle in Amsterdam. He finds a home and a job at the House of Boys, a bar-cum-brothel run by a strict Madame (Udo Kier) who has an eye for what his punters crave. Frank works his way up from barman to on-stage dancer and falls in love with some of his housemates. The first intimations of what is described as 'the gay cancer', casts a long shadow over Frank s tight-knit group of friends. Yet despite the troubles that cloud the hopes and dreams of young Frank, his perseverance, along with support from a willing doctor (Stephen Fry), will carry him through. House of Boys is a glamorous, colourful coming-of-age story that lifts the lid on an exciting world of sex and music, where deep passions suddenly turn into a struggle for courage. However, stick with it as it improves greatly after a short while. Deals with the aids pandemic in an adult and sympathetic way. Overall very enjoyable and educational.

The Fine Line between Cheap Ham and Real Beef
This film was made in 2009. It is set in a boys' dancing bar in Amsterdam in 1984. They year should tell you all you need to know about the medical and social story to come over the next two hours. The film was not a good start for this reviewer: too stereotypical, too patently contrived, too corny and melodramatic, too much like a cheap soap-opera (is there any other kind?), and all that that implies in terms of acting and storyline. But I guess that's the nature of the beast, where actors in their twenties try to play adolescents: it becomes a fine line between cheap ham and real beef. But stick with it. Frank is the nightclub's cocky new boy; Jake is the experienced pro (in more ways than one), but happens to be `straight'. They share a room above the club and a relationship of sorts develops. There is, however, an incongruity when events slip into romantic mode - with its too intrusive score - halfway through the movie, but if they did not, then we would not have the tragedy at the film's end. That ending isn't pretty, but it is surprisingly noble and moving. There are no extras.

Poignant to the point of heartbreak.
This is a story of how vulnerable some of those who succumbed to AIDS in the early 80s were. On the surface, its heroes are good time boys: sexy (very sexy) and carefree. But they all have a story of emotional pain and the world of free sexual expression is also one of sexual exploitation. At the heart of the story is a love affair of tenderness and tear-jerking poignancy. Bits of the production seem occasionally clunky but the last part of the film is stunningly moving. There is no pulling of punches and I thought I got a glimpse of what it must have been like to lose a lover and loved one from the illness. Don't be lulled by the apparent inconsequence of some of the early scenes.

better than i thought
This is a serious film. It goes back to the to the days of AIDS. It is very detailed about the start of it all, it is historical and very detailed. so there is no so called sex in it. The world today still has aids so having this is an education.

This Movie Could Melt a Heart of Stone
This film is extremely well acted, and the cinematography is amazingly impressive. The opening scene of Act III at Christmastime would itself make a charming lithograph or holiday greeting card. The legendary music of such icons as Roy Orbison and the entertaining drag shows featuring impersonations of artists such as transsexual vocalist Romy Haag and others really gave the film a quick paced feel. Most heartwarming was the wonderful love story between the 2 main characters, Frank and Jake, which was sadly overshadowed by Jake contracting AIDS. The support, respect, and unconditional love shown to Jake by his friends and lover as his disease progresses moved me beyond words. And no surprise here---Stephen Fry(star of the phenomenal movie, "Wilde") gives a wonderful performance as Jake's caring physician, Dr.Marsh. I selfishly wish the movie had focused a little more on developing the love story between the 2 main characters rather than on the hospital scenes and agonizing progression of Jake's suffering. However, I respect Writer/Director Jean-Claude Schlim's technical decisions because all in all this is a truly great contribution to gay cinema. It's a movie that has it all----homoerotic passion, unconditional love, superb acting, technical excellence, and a beautiful love story and tragic drama--- all coming to a bittersweet conclusion when Frank and Jake's former girlfriend, Carol, embark on a pilgrimage of sorts to Morocco to scatter Jake's ashes and fulfill Jake's dream of seeing the exotic land associated with Jimi Hendrix's legacy. The beautiful young singer, Nyco Lilliu closes the film with a heart wrenching rendition of "La-bas" ("Somewhere")/"Quelqu'un" ("Someone") Songwriter Cyril Collard himself is heard singing the English version during the closing credits. This is the type of movie that is worth owning, sharing, embracing, treasuring, and celebrating for the truly splendid masterpiece that it is. Along with "Beautiful Thing" and "Shelter", "House of Boys" is one of the three films that I consider the all time best and most beloved trilogy of gay-themed movies.

The Boys are always here
It is far more involved than you might think. The circumstantial setting is the outbreak of HIV-Aids in the early 1980's, and the scenes of mis-diagnosis of Kaposi's sarcoma and the fussing around by professionals and folks about what is happening. There are historical flashbacks and modern wake-up calls, and the whole story is so reminiscent of something us old guys know, that one is almost embarrassed to say that this is not the sex movie one thought it might be, given the title. It is about the Boys, though, even us Old Boys; and we shall be here always. The Story, ultimately, for the Boys, and for All and Each, is about -- yes, I need to be clear -- is about Love. Really. Is there anything else?
