I assume you're talking about a AR-15. It will certainly grip it without leaving gouge marks. However, if the barrel guard requires a lot of torque to remove I'd suggest using "Knocker Loose" to free up any corrosion on the threads prior to any attempt to remove the guard.

Great for filters

Highly Recommended Strap Wrench

Simply and excellent product, well worth the cost. Extremely well manufactured from quality components. It is very strong and I find it an invaluable tool within my workshop. Unlike chain wrenches, this strap wrench is extremely strong and at same time it does not damage engine components when is use.
