Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” an all-new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo befriends his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and meets the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes. Review: An enjoyable space heist movie, not great art but great entertainment - I was a bit sceptical about this one, how would new actors fit into roles made famous in the original trilogy? Was it just going to be a cheap appeal to diehard Star Wars fans? Scraping the bottom of the barrel for ideas? Maybe it is squeezing the franchise, and maybe it is existing on the back of fan loyalty but I found it a thoroughly enjoyable romp that made The Last Jedi look utter rubbish (which in fairness probably wasn't much of a feat). The film has some terrific set piece action sequences and superb effects (as you'd expect from a Star Wars film) but what is maybe surprising is how well Alden Ehrenreich pulled off the part of Han Solo and Donald Glover as Lando Calrisian. Paul Bettany is great as the villain of the piece but I thought the role that stole the film was Woody Harrelson as Tobias Beckett, a sort of likeable rogue who veers between hero of the movie and villain. Emilia Clarke provides Han Solo's pre-Princess Leia love interest. All of the cast play their roles well, it may not be Shakespeare but they throw the right amount of tongue in cheek humour and seriousness into it and it all feels like great fun. The story is an old fashioned heist movie, it takes place in the Star Wars universe but the normal villains (the Empire) are at the edges and the rebellion is only really mentioned obliquely. At least a Star Destroyer and some TIE fighters put in a brief appearance and there are a few storm troopers to make sure it feels like a Star Wars movie. The story fills in some of the Han Solo back story and shows him in the Imperial army and how he met Chewie. Overall the film manages to capture the spirit of the early Star Wars movies (part throw away entertainment, part tongue in cheek and part sinister threat) far better than either the three prequels or the two films of the latest trilogy that have been released. Ron Howard is his usual reliable self as director (always a safe pair of hands) and it feels very professionally done. It's funny how the two spin off movies (Rogue One and Solo) have both been much better films than the prequels or the ltest trilogy. Recommended to both Star Wars fans and those not really into that whole franchise. Review: Why so much negativity? What's not to like? This is Star Wars!!! - I can't understand the negativity around this movie. I get a lot of people didn't like The Last Jedi. But this is not that movie. In fact it simply does what it says on the tin - tells the story of a younger Han Solo. It manages to pack in a lot of the fun of the original Star Wars: A New Hope. It is a romp. It's not full of too many serious issues and it should appeal to anyone who enjoyed the original trilogy. It is certainly a lot lighter in tone than Rogue One - which I also love - but it's good to have contrast. Also what humour is present is entirely justified. There are certainly lots of thrills too. And you see a lot of events which are referred to in the other movies. As a long time follower of Star Wars, one thing I noticed is how this movie seems to reference Han's adventures both in the early Marvel comics and the Brian Daley books. It underlines that the Empire isn't the only threat in the galaxy and we see more of the scoundrel and less of the rebel. That's what make this stand out for me. It harks back to the original repetition of Han as we first saw him. Han isn't an anodyne hero. In fact, he's trying hard not to be a hero. There is a sequence towards the end where we see the harder side of him which we only glimpse in A New Hope - think Greedo. It is obvious that the movie has been left in such a way that a follow up could be made. I hope we get at least one, but it could just as easy be left as it is. Overall a more accessible entry into the canon that say The Last Jedi - although I enjoyed that too, but for different reasons. Also there are shedloads of Easter eggs to keep fans happy. And a big surprise just tops that off. If you are wondering if this is worth getting, do yourself a favour and get it. You may even enjoy it.

The most underrated film of the year!
Please don't boycott this film because of The Last Jedi. This film is on a totally different level. Here are a few points. *Directed by Ron Howard - He really understands Star Wars. Did you know George Lucas wanted him to direct The Phantom Menace, but he declined. *Alden Ehrenreich - Brilliant actor who really embodies the role of Han Solo. He gives the impression he actually enjoys the part, unlike Harrison Ford, who seems to be a bit annoyed at times when playing Han. *Emilia Clarke - The beautiful Emilia gives a fun performance throughout the film. Her character is an interesting one that I would love to see in a future spin-off film. *John Powell (Composer) - Oh my word, my word indeed! John Powell really understands what Star Wars music is all about. Throughout the film there are brilliant call-backs to the original trilogy themes. You'll be grinning from ear to ear when you listen to his fantastic accompanying score to the Kessel Run scene. Let's not forget that the legend himself John Williams composed Han Solo's main theme - A brilliant theme, but that's to be expected from the music maestro himself - even at such an advanced age. Once John Powell gets hold of the classic as well as the new John Williams themes, he gives them energy and drive - plus his trademark love of percussion creates a unique sound that hasn't really been experienced in a Star Wars film before. So to wrap up my review. Overall this is the best Disney era Star Wars film by far. It's fun light hearted and is great for the all the family. Check it out, you wont regret it!

Han's story
Following on from Rogue One, here's another stand alone Star Wars movie. These are designed to fill in the gaps, tell the tales only mentioned in other films, and make Disney even more money in the process. This time, it's Han Solo's backstory. Star Wars fans! Have you ever wanted to see Han's back story on screen? Find out his origins and how he came to be? See him and Chewie meet? See him and Lando meet? See what happens in the shower..errr..,.see him getting the Millennium Falcon! Well now you can! It will doubtless not meet all your expectations and thus give you something to moan about online whilst watching it for the third time. So it does the job. For those who just say 'Ooh! Star Wars!' and just want to enjoy these films, what does it offer? It fills in all the above, whilst telling the story of Han being caught up in the middle of intergalactic crime capers, and trying to survive, get by, and become his own man. It's really four films in one. You get Han's story. You get the intergalactic crime caper movie. You do also get the story of a man trying to take control of his own life. And also one about two people trying to deal with how their dreams of the past haven't turned out to be the realities of the present. As a result, this doesn't quite come together as well as it could have. The latter two of the above mentioned are interesting storylines. The first has it's moments. And the second rather struggles with a lack of tension. Since you know how this will end for Han and Chewie, there's not really enough jeopardy. Except for supporting characters it never quite manages to make you care about. There are stand out points though. Alden Ehrenreich is really good in the lead, with the right amount of charisma to convince in the part, and he does have the ability to carry a lead role off. And the film does perk up considerably whenever Donald Glover is onscreen as the young Lando, as he delivers a really charismatic performance as well. Emilia Clarke's character though never really sparks and she is a bit left stranded by some flat material. It does manage to surprise you at a few points, and it's watchable enough while it lasts. And the ending has the right emotional impact. But it's not a film that's going to stick in the mind for too long after. The disc has the following language and subtitle options: Languages: English, Spanish, English audio description. Subtitles: English, Danish, FInnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, Portugese, Spanish, Swedish. The disc goes straight to the main menu when loaded, with no trailers or ads. But it's another of those minimialist dvd releases as seen with the Marvel movies, thus there are no extras at all.

Before he was General Solo.
Saw this is a special screening before it's release. Does it have flaws? Name a movie that doesn't. This has a good story and shows how Han became the rogue with a heart of gold that we meet in A New Hope.
