Review: Newer (2018) vs Older Version, & Excellent Fit for DIY Air Conditioner - . That's correct: the 02Cool is an excellent fit for a DIY 5 gallon air conditioner WITHOUT any modification to the top of the bucket or Styrofoam bucket liner. While our first purchase of the 02Cool was two units in 2011 (which are still in emergency operational use), this review also covers comparisons with the newer model recently purchased. The newer version has a 2018 manufacture date on it. The PLUSES are: 1. Both the older and newer (2018) model have very low wattage use when on either low or high setting (about 14/19 watts power draw respectively). This negligible use of watts is excellent when the fans are connect to an emergency backup battery source like the Goal Zero units (more on that latter): 2. The newer model seems more monolithic in build and seems to use lighter weight materials; 3. It is easier to open the new model base, where in the old model it could be difficult and frustrating unless you used the correct opening technique; 4. While the newer model is more quieter, it seems to produce less forced air when on higher setting (especially at greater distances from the fan). The simple solution is to place the fan closer to the person. NEGATIVE--Only applies to the Newer Model (2018): 1. The only significant negative is that the manufacturer REMOVED the convenient REAL HOOK where the fan operator could use the hook to hang the fan on a rope or bar. What is on the newer model is more like a 90 degree handhold. For both models, if one has planned resources for "when the lights go out" because of any critical incident, then it makes complete survival sense to use these fans because: 1) Battery operated; 2) Low Wattage (for use with batteries, and backup battery sources such as homemade units or the Goal Zero units), and 3) Portability (including use on top of the DIY 5 gallon bucket you built to cool down those that God placed in your stewardship such as the aged and the infirmed. While it is best to have your own lower wattage deep freezer and backup battery power to make and store your own ice, note that at least during the recover period during a critical incident FEMA and/or your local state emergency management operations usually provide ice to residents. Save those food grade tough plastic bottles so you can repeatedly refreeze the water in those bottle to use in your DIY 5 Gallon Air Conditioner. Lastly, the O2Cool fan can be laid flat on top of your DIY 5 Gallon Air Conditioner without having to cut the top lid of the bucket or the Styrofoam bucket liner that prolongs the life the ice. For the internet video search DIY 5 Gallon bucket air conditioner and look for the orange bucket in the image. Stay Safe, ...GhillieMan (aka, Chappy)
Review: Update after using for four years - Original post: We used this on a three-night camp trip into southern Iowa in August. It made all the difference for getting a good night's sleep. It created enough of a breeze on the low setting to give relief without blowing too hard. On the low setting there wasn't quite enough white noise to cover campground sounds or animals treading about but the high setting did a good job of covering noise. The batteries gave enough weight in the base for it to remain upright all night. We like that it folds up to a very portable size and doesn't take up much room among the camp gear. Update one year and three months after purchase: We returned the original purchase as it was defective and got a replacement without any issues. Very reliable fan. Ended up using it in the bedroom for white noise on the low setting. Folded up, it propped easily into the window. The high setting brought in enough evening air to cool the room for night sleeping and the low setting is perfect white noise. It has run for eight hours a night for 15 months. Other fans we've had tended to develop vibration noises after several months, very annoying and not conducive to falling asleep. Not this one. It sounds and performs the same as the day it came out of the box. The only caveat I have to add is that the covering on the cord separated near the fan body's plug-in point, exposing the little wires within AC adapter cord. It came as a result of the cord bending downward at the connector every night to plug into an outlet below the window. It's beyond repair and needs replacement. We tried a couple of power adapter cords from several electronic devices we have but none worked. I see that a replacement AC adapter cord is available from the manufacturer for $12, about half the price of the unit itself. Based on the performance of the fan, we figure it's worth it. The old cord will go to electronic recyclers. As a precaution, so the same thing doesn't happen again on the new cord, we'll probably wrap some electrician's tape around the first couple of inches at the connection to support and ease the bend in the cord. Overall, it's been a good little fan and worth the purchase. UPDATE FOUR YEARS AFTER PURCHASE: still going! Still using it every single night for white noise. Sometimes it makes a little squealing noise for a couple of seconds but giving it a quick smack makes it stop.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ It's different from my old one, in both good and bad ways. Overall a great little fan.
*by D***R on January 5, 2021*

This is actually my 3rd O2Cool fan, I like them, a LOT, but they keep seeming to grow feet and walk off every few hunting seasons. More specifically in a rush to get back to civilization before the ultra nasty weather sets in, somebody forgets to haul the battery fan out of the rented bunk house and it is never there when we get back next year... These fans have been around for quite some time now, this is the first I have found them on Amazon. Over the years a couple of things have changed, and this one has an annoying change, but let's start with the good shall we? The good. I have never had one of these die on me aside from batteries running out, not the fans fault per se. Durability with my use is good. I use this to shove heated air from a Mr. Heater Portable buddy around the bunk house, or tent to allow the heat to circulate instead of simply rise straight up and throgh the ceiling. It makes a massive difference in comfort anywhere away from the heater. And no, do NOT place this too close to the front of the heater! Operation is simple and smooth. I use the Amazon basics batteries for this, I need to upgrade to rechargeable D cells but have been too cheap to do so as of yet.... Battery life is good, can't really say how long because I don't run it 24x7, but on our camping trips we average 6 hours run time a night for weekend trips (2 nights) and a set of batteries has been known to last a full camping season. Compared to the earlier model with the swing over handle, and more rigid glossy plastic housing, this newer model seems more ruggedly built, fewer moving plastic parts to fail, a smoother switch, overall better fit and finish. Like I said the earlier model had a swing over handle that had to be more expensive to manufacture vs. the extended lip landle on the top of this thing, but the newer handle design I would think would be far less likely to be a failure point. Keep it simple. The one place where they made a change that left me scratching my head and I do not feel is an improvement is the closures for the battery compartment. Previously they were slide latches that you simply slide over with your fingers, the new design requires some sort of straight edge tool like a screwdriver, a coin, or a swiss army knife to open up, all of which I have in camp, it's just an extra step, and additional engineering that made me wonder why they bothered changing it. It makes the battery compartment harder to get into. Earlier models you could buy an additional AC transformer to run the fan off of wall power. Mind you, when I camp, if I have 110V power available, I am going to use an electric heater with a built in fan and don't need this, BUT I can see for RV users and whatnot, they might want this. The good thing is this newer version included the transformer, and unfortunately no way to stow it. Perhaps in future iterations they might consider designing in on board storage for the transformer to reduce the odds of it getting lost between uses. Overall I think it's a great little fan, 2 speeds, more than enough power to move air through a 10x12 family tent or 10x16 bunkhouse / hunting shack. If you need very portable, energy efficient, reliable, and effective air moving for a small space, this would be a highly recommended fan, just accept that it has foibles.
