Almost Perfect
How many times has The Doors body of work been issued, re-issued, re-released, and remixed? Oh. Too many. Despite just six studio albums released in Morrisons lifetime, there have been approximately 17 best of compilations, around 26 warts'n'all live albums (ranging from the splendid to the humiliating), four box sets, a slew of bafflingly pointless remixes, and yet still some of the important work remains hidden."Perception" at least is a step - mostly - in the right direction. As far as a place to start with The Doors this is almost everything you need in one place. Each of the original six studio albums is presented in a remastered form, alongside 20 or so additional tracks. In addition, on the box set, each album is also presented 5.1 remixed form (that is, recreated from the original masters to take into account the new range of the format instead of the relatively squashed restrictions of a groove cut into 30cms of vinyl), alongside a handful of promotional films. At first sight, this set has everything : but it doesn't. 1970's "Absolutely Live" - now reformatted for compact disc as "In Concert" with extra songs - is absent, as are the 20 or so alternate versions and live cuts from 1997's Box Set for which this is plenty of space on the discs. Given the miserly extras on the final album, it's also surprising that the final Jim Morrision / Doors recording - a version of "Crawling King Snake" - is also only on the DVD portion. The spartan visual area of two songs per disc offers some startling omissions as a multitude of television and concert performances are absent, though these are all available elsewhere on numerous compilations. In the end, "Perception" is, if you want all The Doors albums in one place affordably, the place to be. There are a myriad of other choices to be made - I would recommend the "In Concert" set and 1978's posthumous "American Prayer" as bookends - and after that, you're lost in the jungle of endless compilations and live releases. Start here. And if you want to go further, the world is your oyster.

The best band ever!
My favourite all time band. This is a great collection including extra tracks and music videos. Each CD includes a booklet. Well worth it.

Perception - Box Set (Original box with spy-hole) RIP Ray
I was one of the original customers to get the limited edition box that is bigger than the re-issued version and has a spy-hole that has images of the band if you look through the small eye glass. As a Doors fan I already had all the original CDs of the Doors. What this set gives us is all the Doors studio albums re-mixed and with a load of out-takes and alternative takes. Some of these tracks were found on the Doors Box Set from 1997 but also remixed yet again. What I really love about this set is the DVD Audios in 5.1, these albums sound amazing in 5.1 and really bring out Jim Morrisons vocals and the sound of the band in a far greater light. For some reason I continue to play L.A Woman far more than any other DVD because it sounds the most spectacular in 5.1, especially Riders On The Storm. This entire set has been produced brilliantly by Bruce Botnick and deserves to be in your collection if you can still buy it. Seems it has been discontinued but can be found if you look around. This review is dedicated to the late Ray Manzarak

Where's the vocals.
This is without doubt a very godd addition to The Doors catalogue. The CDs are incredible and sound awesome. The problem comes when you listen to the DVD Audio. As my title says - where are the vocals ? I have a very good quality DVD audio player and the MUSIC sounds fantastic , the best I have ever heard. Unfortunately the vocals are so badly mixed with the music that they are for the most part inaudible ! What a shame as they could have been SO MUCH better. If you buy this for the cds it is worth the money. If you buy this for the DVD Audio as I did, think hard before you buy.

The last time you'll ever have to buy any Doors!!
Contained are the original six albums that were issued during Jim Morrison's lifetime, sounding more amazing than I've ever heard them. Each are available as normal cds or dvd-audio 5:1, combined with two visual performances per album and an absolute shedload of extras. The booklets contain essays by notable rock journalists such as Ben Fong-Torres and Paul Williams and include photos and full lyrics.I guess the question most people want answered is, is it worth replacing my old copies? At the price offered here, I would say yes. The sound is so improved that even the weaker offerings like The Soft Parade just leap out of their sonic cages and for the first time demand real attention. There are enough extras to keep you drooling for days.

Excellent sounding remastered CD's as well as hi-res 2 channel and surround audio!
Excellent! You get remastered CD's as well as hi-res DVD Audio ( in 2 channel stereo as well as surround ). Also a very reasonable price ( I managed to find a "used" copy in new condition for less than $100 ) for this box set of all the Doors albums, oh ya' they sound great by the way - next best thing to really good remastered vinyl.

Wowzers.
I pretty much love the new mixes as they reflect how The Doors actually sound without all the studio trickery. Really, only the first two albums are much different but what you hear in the DVDA mixes is pure Doors heaven. EVERYTHING is so damn close to you and sonically perfect in a sense. You have never heard the whole band like this and I think Jim would have been proud of what they accomplished. I got this set for 50 BUCKS! back when amazon had the import for sale so I cannot whine about the price. The slipcase is way too tight though and I cannot keep them in it without scratching the covers further. As for the content the ONLY thing is they did not include the original masters on the DVDA in high-res stereo at least though it looks like they had space to. Not a big deal as I doubt there was much more detail in those to be had. The do however include them in pristine CD quality on 6 of the discs. Pretty sure they are the old remasters which sounded great to my ears.Of course some people are not going to like the remixing and some of the added parts. I say HMPH to you. This is truly the best way to hear the band. Since the debut had a lot of reverb and studio trickery it can sound a bit pedestrian but it truly is still a great listen on the DVDA and sounds exactly how you would expect them too in crystal clear audio quality. The surround mixes are also fantastic and have a lot of nice separation and detail though I don't listen to them as much.Anyway you have it this boxset rocks. Don't listen to the haters The Doors have never sounded better.

The Doors of Perception....
Die bonustracks auf den DVDs kommen super rüber - ich denke this is not the end
