Must-Have for Dissertation Writing

very short
This book was very short. it only had phrases to use not any explanation as to why it is academic writing. It is more like a thesaurus. That being said I think it will be a handy pocket reference book to add variety to my writing.

Extremely helpful!
This has been especially helpful while writing my dissertation. It provides a variety of options to help you avoid repeating the same phrases over and over again. It also provides options depending on what type of writing you are doing or which type of research you are writing up (quant vs qual). I've recommended it to all of my fellow PhD candidates as well as faculty.

A time-saver for Academic writers
When I was doing my M.A. in an English-speaking country, I'd waste a lot of time when writing my term papers looking for a formal/academic-sounding way of conveying what I wanted to say. I mean, how many times can you write "So and So claim..." or "This study aims..." before your reader thinks there is something seriously wrong with your command of the English language? I'd end up looking for articles not for content but for form and lifting the expressions from there. Needless to say, that was really time-consuming. Luiz Otavio Barros has saved us that precious writing time: he's listed the most useful sentences and phrases in Academic English, esp. for term papers and articles. The book itself follows the stages of an article and brings the gambits you'll need to write your introduction, then the literature review, then the methodology, and so on, so forth. On top of that, each chapter ends with a few tips/explanations based on common language mistakes learners make, followed by a short exercise to consolidate what you've read.

Simply amazing!
Basically, I have no words to express how good and useful this book is. It seeks to shed light on how to better write dissertations, essays etc, by providing the user with chunks they might not even imagine themselves using. I believe it is somewhat hard for one to easily come up with such phrases as "The theoretical framework underpinning this study is..." or "A number of studies have shown that... . However, important questions regarding N remains unanswered." In my humble opinion, these are beautiful and interesting phrases for an assignment, to say the least. I highly recommend this book for anyone preparing their final academic papers and for language teachers as well.

Some mistakes in it
This book has some good phrases, which are definitely useful to some extent. However, it also has a few mistakes in it that bother me in an style guide for academics writing. "If" and "Whether" can not be used interchangeably. I don't want to explain the difference here so please google it. Using "whether or not" is very commong in spoken English. While studying for the GMAT I learned many interesting things that are technically wrong in "perfect English." This "whether or not" is an example of it. "Because" and "due to" can also not be used interchangably in many instances. *sigh*

A useful addition to your academic English bookshelf
I think this book is best for high-int/advanced English speakers who need tips to improve their academic writing. There is of course the abundance of writing support tools such as Grammarly and other AI-supported tools that can make corrections for the kind of issues that this book presents. Plus, there is the online Academic Phrase Bank by Manchester University that is a free go-to reference for academic phrases. However, this book's strength is managing to not get out of control in terms of the possible scope of an academic writing book, as well as in the way language items are succinctly chunked and explained. I particularly like the "trick pairs" of words and the quizzes, as these feel like original sticky points. As I went along, I was wondering what the basis for the language selection featured in the book was. It wasn't until I got to the end that the author explains that the compilation is the result of painstaking work through thousands of actual papers across different disciplines. That elevates the quality of the book, and that information should have been presented earlier on. I also think that there could be some schematics at the beginning that concisely explain general essay structures. I also think that some comments about British/American English and passive/active voice divisions should have been qualified by the fact that these are often down to a particular publication's or institution's style preferences.

Worth its price.
It's basically a phrasebook. Great tool, though in my opinion more useful for science students.
