It has to pass the chip, about the size of a large grain of rice. Watched a video on YouTube and followed the instructions. Very easy and the dogs hardly flinched. I would suggest not removing the (for lack of a better word) safety mechanism from the plunger part of the needle until the needle is in the dogs skin. It didn't happen to me, but I could see accidentally losing the chip. Also strongly recommend the 100% free chip registries found on Google.
