Is this bold bright enough to read by on your nightstand like maybe a 40 W bulb would?

Yes. My mom used one for reading - she is over 70. I would estimate the light is equal to between a 40W and 60W bulb. I use only one bulb to light everything in my great room (living room and dining room) and kitchen area at night. It's enough for everything I need to do.

How is this different from an ordinary light bulb with an orange coating that filters out blue light?

Unlike many simply filtered lights the initial spectrum of the bulb is also adjusted so the while some of the blue is filtered what remains is a light still capable of rendering color sufficiently for our perception.

I work night's and have trouble sleeping during the day! Would it help me?

It has definitely helped me with being able to get to sleep when I want to. You have to make sure you don't have other sources of blue light as well (cell phone, monitor, TV, etc...).
