Traditional mascaras use different oxidation states of iron oxides (black, red, and yellow with the red and yellow being only used in the brown shade). In carbon black the black iron oxide pigment is replaced with a carbon compound that has a much deeper more obsidian appearance. Black iron oxides are naturally occurring minerals and vary on the shade their "blackness" where the carbon black is much more consistently deep black. **Q: Has anyone used the black/brown color? Is it a deep brown color or lighter brown?** A: I have bought this many times . It is dark and not to much difference then the black one. I personally think the color is great. **Q: does this mascara flake or smudge by the end of the day?** A: I love and use l'Oreal Voluminous mascara exclusively, but I have found that on me the Carbon Black does smudge. Using the primer helps, but I avoid this color. I haven't experienced smudging with any other color and right now am using brownish black. It's a nice daytime color. (the Carbon Black is a great color for dramatic nighttime use, and it may not smudge on you! I also like it because it seems like it's quicker to put on than some of the other brands that I have where it goes on so fine that I have to sit and keep putting on layers. With this stuff I'm able to just do a few strokes on my entire lash and I'm good to go. I love the thick and dramatic look it gives when I really want my lashes to stand out. Just to warn you though, even though this is not waterproof, I find it difficult to get off the same way that waterproof mascara takes a little more effort to remove. That can be a little frustrating when I'm in a hurry.
