Live Russian Comfrey Root, Bocking 14 Cultivar by Verdant Treasures

The Comfrey cuttings were received on November 16. I followed the directions provided and soaked them in water for 4 hours before planting. Here I have pictures of the plants right after unpacking and during the soak. Hopefully you can see that they are very healthy cuttings with no soft spots or any other blemishes. I elected not to cut the roots into smaller pieces (for more plants) because it is more important to me to have fewer more vigorous plants. By November 22 two of the plants had leaves. In six days Plant 1 is 3.5inches and Plant 2 is just over 2 inches tall. By December 1; Plant 1 is close to 10.5 inches with multiple leaves Plant 2 largest leaf is 7 inches and Plant 3 sprouted a leaf !! You can see the 3 in last photo provided. The directions provided with the plants state that it can take up to 60 days to see growth above ground – so I am just thrilled to have my last cutting showing growth. I did mess up and not cover Plant 3 completely but this has not seemed to hurt the plant. I have had these plants for 15 days. They are kept on my office floor by a window facing east and the room is kept in the mid 60’s. We have not had much sun and its been cold here, evenings in the 20’s. I elected to start them in 1gallon pots (due to root size) and used a good potting soil and kept the soil moist. These cuttings are AWESOME and they arrived with in a few days of ordering and in perfect shape. All I have done is follow the directions provided. After reading some of the reviews I was unsure if I would order, but the price was so appealing I decided to take the chance. Also, due to some of the reviews, I also committed to tracking the performance of these cuttings so I could give an objective and fair review. The instructions provided are through and right on! They arrived timely and healthy. I absolutely would buy these again!!!

So excited to say that all of my root cuttings are all sprouting! This arrived well packaged and great instructions for planting. I was impressed with a note from the sender asking for feedback on how the plants progress. I would definitely buy again and recommend. Thanks to the seller for my new comfrey babies.

I have no experience with comfrey apart from Permaculture knowledge of it, and seeds ordered from another Amazon seller. I couldn't get the seeds to sprout (trying again with a batch in the fridge), so I opted for root cuttings. To be fair to the seller, I'd been waiting to do a review until all or most of the Bocking 14 comfrey put forth leaves. My actual order was for 5 roots, but when I opened the package, the seller (Verdant Treasures) left a note that they'd added another 2 roots for free (7 total roots). I hadn't asked for anything extra, and it was a nice gesture by the seller, but the 5-star rating is itself strictly based upon the package quickly arriving, and that every root cutting became a plant. Thank you. The package arrived (ordered Sept. 17th) on Sept. 21st, however I didn't have time to deal with it, so I did as was advised in the provided documentation, and placed them in the refrigerator (though I did re-moisten the wrappings first). After 3-days, I pulled them out and used a razor blade to cut each 6" root into 3-pieces (2"). I'm not a razor wielding monster (I think). Razors provide cleaner, less destructive cuts, which causes less harm to and fewer problems for plants. One of the roots had a small fork, so I cut that off to see if I could get an extra plant to grow. Proper 2" Root Cuttings: 21 Extra Forked Bit: 1 So I had a total of 22 cuttings, and placed each one in its own peat pot. The soil in each pot was a mixture of my homemade compost and perlite, then each was topped with a teaspoon of fresh worm castings from the bin. I watered them in, and waited. Weather has been hot (high 80s to high 90s) while they've been growing. After 1 week, a single pot sprouted leaves, and it pretty much stayed that way until late October. It has now been 39 days, and all pots have leaves bursting from the soil, including the forked one (given a special label and can be seen in the photo). I'm very happy with the results, and unless all goes wrong, I shouldn't have to buy comfrey root again. If I find that I need to order more for some reason, I'd be very happy to do business with Verdant Treasures again.

Will update review when or if the Comfrey sprouts. I was excited to find a seller for this Item on amazon, so I gave it a shot, And so far I am very happy. I was promised a cigarette sized cutting, and it is a good deal larger than a cigarette. The thickness I would estimate is about 30% larger, so I am very happy with my purchase at this time. If this sprouts, it will stay a 5 star review, If not, It will be downgraded to a 4 star review, as they have gone above and beyond and any potential failure at this point would have a tinge of my own personal ability involved, so can't fault them too much. Root cutting looks healthy! Update 8/21/2023 after I got the root cutting, let it soak for 4 hours, and put it into soil, it sprouted on the left. one week later, and it is also sprouting on the right. Very vigorous growth. Great seller. 5 Starts all around. Update 9/9/2023, I decided to repot them plants, and found they had taken over a 12" pot. they were not root bound, but the entire pot was filled with roots. I separated each plants root balls, and potted them into 20 gallon pots. Hopefully they root well for the foreseeable future, as I am astonished with these cute little plants. Adding two more pictures of their progress, prior to this, I only posted one photo. Ten month update 05/24/2024 plants have grown into full fledged comfrey plants, and have begun to flower, at the end of this season, or the start of the next, I plan to dig them up and check on the roots to see progress and will update again.

Absolutely excellent comfrey start! I planted the start about 35 days ago. The directions said it could take up to 60 days to see it pop up, but this pictures shows where is at after only a little over a month! The leaves are bigger than my hand and we think we can actually watch it grow daily. I did start this indoors with morning sun, so that might be why it grew faster, but I will be hardening and placing outside in another month. Directions are in depth for any one new to growing comfrey. With all it's uses, that alone is a reason to always have it on hand, but it's such a beautiful plant too! I would buy from this seller all day long! We're REALLY impressed with this plant! Kudos to the shop!

Concerned that the Russian Comfrey wasn't coming up, however after contacting Verdent Treasures cooresponding with Charlie I had not alloted enough time. The response was quick and the two I ordered did come up and the plants are doing very well. Thank You!

Outstanding. Fast shipping and the root was moist and mailed with care. Will be ordering more. Update: 2 months later and nothing has grown. Followed instructions.
