if this printer is only used occasionally will the cartridge dry out and not print like my inkjet cartridge?

No, ink jet printer use a liquid jnk cartridge. A laser printer uses a cartridge that has a powder toner (the ink) so you won't have the problem of the ink drying on then print head. Hope that helps you.

does it scan and save pictures in color to the computer?

I see some people do not grasp your question back in 2018. Others did. The answer is a quick YES the scanner works for color but the printer is monochrome or just prints in black and white and only has a black toner cartridge. Otherwise the scanner does scan and save images in color like most scanners do. I decided however to go with a Brother smaller though somewhat obsolete model that's only black toner too and a Cannon older model flat bed or fed scanner instead of a two in one. I'm finding this works very well and handles up to 100 even 110 # cardstock through it's pass through option. This printer HP continues to tell me will only take plain paper up to 32 pounds I believe was their most recent answer. I do foiling in paper and card crafting and so need it to handle cardstock in white and even colored paper and cardstocks. So far the brother is doing great. I am not sure why the newer model laser printers are not able to handle cardstock? I use a wonderful double sided photo paper and my husbands new color HP laser printer 2021 won't handle cardstock well at all and therefore does not handle photo papers especially the heavier kind even. That's what prompted me to search for a black and white one that will handle cardstocks. But your question is more about the scanner than the printer it appears. Hope you found your ideal set up.

It doesn't support wired *ethernet* connection. Your two options are to connect via USB cable to computer, or wireless internet (WiFi).
