Home Rules: Transform the Place You Live into a Place You'll Love

And I like Nate Berkus but this book is sad. No real substance just breezy advice.

After seeing some of Nate's Before and After decorating transformations on Oprah Winfrey's show, I did a search to find his book on decorating, assuming that he HAD to have a book. But no, not a single one, even though he kept appearing on the show, and I kept searching for the inevitable book which I figured HAD to appear. Well, now it finally has and,happily, it is just as wonderful as I'd hoped. For one thing, this is a guy who understands how to make very personal spaces which fit the person who lives there. Every one of his rooms are unique and each one contains personal touches, special momentoes or collections that are meaningful to the owner. These aren't rooms that not only delight the eye but made for living and, even better, they are often low maintenance and practical, even though they look luxurious. I particularly like the fact that Nate realizes that most people have lots of "stuff" (CDs, videos, photos, books, children's toys) and those items need to be stored somewhere - so there is plenty of emphasis on attractive storage solutions where all those extra items can fit, leaving the room looking uncluttered. This is also a guy who is not afraid to express his opinions (no wallpaper borders, please). Finally, I have to admit it...I'd have bought this book just to be able to look at that cover photo. Brings a smile to my face every time I do. I'm looking forward to adding it to my bookshelf, cover facing OUT, so I see that gorgeous face whenever I walk in the room.

I really liked the book and the ideas and materials Nate talks about. Most of the design styles were not my style but we all have our own tastes. I still refer back to the book with the ideas and designs that I did love.

As a fan and biased reviewer (based on that fact) I enjoyed this book very much. The book seems true to the inspirations and styles that Nate represents in all facets of his brand. Did it transform me as a "wanna be" designer, no, but did I enjoy the books amazing photographs, approachable nature and overall experience and thirst for design inspiration, YES. A stunning book for the Nate fans out there who won't be disappointed...but remeber it is a book and not going to give you the ability to be Nate, just some great insights to create our own style journey, so enjoy....

It's a good book but colors and styles are a bit dated. However, frankly I would buy almost any Nate Berkus book because his written word is timeless in the universe of decor.

I'm not a decorator. I don't have an eye for colors and what matches and what doesn't. I must admit that every home that I've had, my mother has decorated for me. Nate Berkus and his book have allowed me to grow up and begin to decorate my house on my own. His ideas are so simple, but with an enormous impact. He details every aspect of home decorating to include painting as well as how to decorate mantels, bookshelves, and other places that sometimes aren't considered in home decorating. The pictures are very beautiful and full of color. If you are a fan of Oprah and especially Nate, then this book is a must have.

This book is written by my favorite t.v. designer; that is because he shows people a gorgeous elaborate, expensive choice of things that merge in a room ,then shows people step by step how to achieve the look in various ways from complete flea-market finds fixed up or adding a few flourishes with the "good" stuff added to vintage or flea market finds to make the same cohesive look! Very easy to read; I think it's a must for everyone, whether apt. renters or home owners.

Most of the decorating books I have read show you how to transform specific spaces. I like this book because it helps you develop ideas for your own space by helping you define the space and your own taste. Then you are given helpful decorating tips such as color schemes and painting techniques. If you want a book that is an all round reference for decorating your home, this is it. My only beef is that it could go into more detail. It is an easy read.

Thought this would just be a coffee table book with not much practical info but I was totally wrong. It's really good and you also get a real sense of Nate's personality and thought process coming through in this book. Very happy

Nate Berkus war und ist einer der neuen Generation, sein Stil ist jung und erfrischend und einfach anders. Alle, die Spaß am Einrichten haben und auch an einer neuen Richtung, werden seine Bücher gern in ihre Sammlung aufnehmen, mir hat es sehr gut gefallen und ich kann es daher sehr empfehlen.

I really like his work and this book did not disappoint me.Nice before and afters and a lot of explanatory comments
