Q: The sharpening rod is for honing so don't you need to buy a separate sgarpener?

The rod will help keep the edge longer but a sharpener will come in handy at some point. If you don't have one there are plenty of cheap standard models available but I've recently heard from some chef's that the roller style is the way to go. Here is a link to an example following.
