American Crew Heavy Hold Pomade 85g

PROS: 1) excellent hold for short/shortish hair 2) re-activates with water 3) only need a small amount = long lasting tub CONS: 1) Sticky feel unlike the AC normal hold pomade 2) hair is slightly dullened I have strong black hair which has a fine tolerance to a short cut. By that, I mean that there’s a fine balance between cutting my hair short and spiking it. Fortunately, my regular hairdresser knows that balance, but, this American Crew Strong Hold Pomade covers any errors. I had been using my wife’s hairdresser, but she was very hit and miss depending on what was going on with her life I’d either look like a superstar or a hedgehog. This pomade compensated massively until I decided to go back to my own hairdresser. You only need a small amount, even though the temptation might be to take more. This is because when you try to rub this on your hands it sort of sticks hard. HOWEVER, if you work it into WET/DAMP hair it goes in easily and covers well. Blowdrying for a minute after is enough to set it. I get up at 0400hrs to be at my office for 0900hrs. Sometimes I have my shower the night before to save waking my wife at stupid o’clock. I always look like I’ve been in a fight when I wake up. AC Strong hold Pomade gets my hair looking immaculate before I drive to work in a very quick time. The one real downside is that it tends to make my hair look a little dull. I’ve solved this by using the AC regular/normal hold pomade as a finishing touch. I use just a tiny amount spread over after blow drying and I get the best of both worlds, shine and great hold. There is a sort of hard feeling to my hair, but it doesn’t look unnatural. Buy this, it’s Dottore approved!

If I was on a desert island I wouldn't be using hair products but if I could only take one this would be it. It is not what I would expect from a pomade as it is not greasy and it is very water soluble. Smell is ok but nothing special - a non-intrusive grownup smell. Great hold all day. Looks good with either a comb run through it for a 1930's smartness or just shaped by hand for something less formal but still composed. If you brush the stiffness out there are still enough oils to maintain a conditioned hold. I'd call it more of a gel wax than a pomade. I've tried a lot of high hold and shine and this is the best (previously I was a big fan of AC pomade but now think the heavy hold pomade is better)

This pomade isn't too bad, has a nice manly scent and a gel like consistency until applied. I have tried both dry and wet hair application and I think dry is better - when I applied it to wet hair and went outside, the wind was blowing my hair around in chunks, not a good look. Dry on the other hand, has held well. When set you definitely cannot run your hands through so don't expect that, it definitely has some crunchy texture but overall it's not a bad finish. Use a sizeable amount for best results, don't be too conservative with it.

Leaves a lovely shiny finish, you'll need to use something else before and after though like sea salt spray and hair spray, otherwise it will fall out of place fairy quickly

Not a very strong hold

i've been struggling to find a product that has done exactly what this does, it smells great, uses only a tiny amount of product, doesn't feel stiff or sticky when in the hair and the hold is as described, the only product i have found that has helped with my frizz

This will hold anything in place, especially if applied when hair is wet/damp. Much stronger than regular pomade. Texture is really nice too, clear and looks like a gel but with the thickness of pomade. Smells really nice but not too strong, I have very dry hair with a tendency to be frizzy, this product provides first class control and is better than other (in some cases more expensive) brands I’ve tried. This will be the one for me for the foreseeable.

The more expensive 'scented' version is the same product (with the same barcode) as the cheaper one.
