What ingredients should I buy to give to my son with the kit?

Depends a little on age, but the kit comes with nothing, so you should at least have a couple basics on hand: food coloring, salt, white vinegar, vegetable oil, lemon juice, clear liquid soap. You can google "chemistry for x year old" and get some more ideas. A lot has changed... My first chem set had 16 things that could kill you.

Could someone please tell me what experiment #5 is in this kit?  Describe the idea please or take a photo.  Ours came with two of #3 and none of #5.

My daughter is turning 8, is this set to "young" for her?

I see she is now almost 11, but for others contemplating this question.   I am sure there is nothing wrong with this kit for the 8 year old, and I'll bet the activities would be perfect for independent exploration (have received my order yet, so no promises) But...I am a science teacher and have taught science lab to grades K-8.  My Kinder and grade one kiddos were perfectly capable of using the "regular" labware in class some pieces were even glass.  Amazon has some great polypropylene lab ware (some that I ordered with this kit for a science teacher friend's 2 year old) that, along with a book of kitchen chemistry, would be a far better investment that will take your budding scientist into her middle school science fair years and beyond.

Is this suitable for a 7 yr old

My son was three and a half when I got him this. He can't read the suggested experiments and he didn't really understand them. He had fun pouring colored water,ice etc from one container to another. I think for a 7-year old, he/she can definitely do all the suggested experiments and look up other actual experiments.
