Yes, it is spicy. How spicy is very subjective. I like things VERY spicy, so on my scale of 1-10, where 1 is "can just detect the spicy" and 10 is "SO SPICY I'M CRYING WOOHOO," for me the paste is between 2 and 3.

Does this have the mala spiciness (Sichuan peppers) or just normal capsaicin spiciness?

No. You need to add Sichuan peppercorns to your dish yourself.
