How many times can the tester be used?

FROM HM DIGITAL: Unlimited.  Eventually, you will need new batteries, but the TDS-EZ can be used an unlimited number of times.

What temperature was this device calibrated at? I noticed that readings vary with temperature. How do I get a consistent reading?

FROM HM DIGITAL: The TDS-EZ was calibrated at 25 degrees Celsius (77F), but more importantly, the TDS-EZ is one of HM Digital's most basic meters and does not have Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC).  Therefore, since it does not have ATC, you will see discrepancies when testing hotter or colder from the baseline of 25C/77F.If your water is typically around this temperature, it won't be much of a difference, but if +/-10 degrees or more from 25C/77F, it's a good idea to get a meter with ATC, such as HM Digital's TDS-3, TDS-4, AP-1, COM-80 or COM-100.

can the battery be replaced? if so, what battery does it take?

Yes, the batteries can be replaced. It takes 2 LR44G "button cell" batteries like the batteries that go in watches, ect. The unit has an auto shut-off so the batteries should last a good long time.

Can this be used to check for collodial silver in the 10 ppm range in a solution of distilled water?

Accepted Answer

No it can't.  It doesn't detect specific elements or chemicals.  Though the way calcium, lead, and collodial silver may dissolve would effect the numerical value of TDS and if you knew that in 100 ml of 45 deg Celsius water would only hold X# ppm of an element you might be able to figure it out based on the numerical value shown.
