Solid bridge camera
I wanted to leave a review because I almost didn't buy this camera after reading the other reviews and that would have been a shame. I had the Canon SX60 but during a visit to the swamp it fell in the water and stopped working. I was heartbroken because I loved that camera. I almost bought that model again but thought I would take a chance on the newer SX70. I have been using it for several days now on my birding forays. Like any camera, I had to get used to it, but I made the transition fairly easily from the SX60. Other reviewers mentioned issues with the menus. I didn't have issues, but i was expecting to after reading the other reviews. So I took the precaution of going through all the menus just to get familiar with them after I charged the batteries and before I went into the field. I was able to program the C1 and C2 settings the way I preferred them with very few issues. My biggest stumble was saving the settings because I kept thinking the menu would say Save like the Sx60, but it says Register settings (specifically, you go to the wrench/tools menu, Custom shooting mode, then select Register settings, and whatever settings you have selected will be saved for your choice of C1 or C2). It was not difficult, just different. I do suggsst familiarizing yourself with the menus before doing anything. There are more menus than on the SX60 and they are set up a little differently. The camera itself has been working well for me. I will note that it feels more "plasticky" and less solid than my old SX60, but I am okay with that so far. It also uses different batteries which is too bad as I have a lot of old batteriesfor my other camera. I do like the bluetooth connection to my tablet--it took me a little messing around to set it up, but it works well. I included my first shot as an example. Just a cardinal at our bird feeder, but it does give you an example of a casual photo that is possible without doing anything special at all. I am not a photographer. I just like taking photos of birds and our dogs. Anyway , I wanted to give another viewpoint. I like this camera so far and am glad I took a chance on it.

Great superzoom bridge camera value!
I upgraded to this camera from the PowerShot sx60 HS. In my opinion, this camera is a worthy upgrade from the sx60hs. I find the autofocus to be faster, the camera slightly lighter and more ergonomic than its predecessor, improved continuous shooting speed of 10 frames per second, the latest DIGIC 8 image processor for better looking photos, and the increased pixel count of the sensor that also improves photo quality. I also ike the Bluetooth and wifi connectivity options for transferring images to a mobile device. I primarily use this camera for taking close up pictures of birds, and it does a very adequate job of this, as did its predecessor the sx60hs. However, the sx70hs, with the aforementioned upgrades, is in my opinion a very competitive camera in the field of superzoom bridge cameras. I will attach several photos that I took with this camera as they appear right out of the camera in jpeg mode, without any post editing. I highly recommend this camera.

Fastest big zoom in the West
The short story: This is a point-and-shoot with a VERY long zoom. It won't give you image quality of a high-end DLSR with a crystal-clear 1200 mm zoom, but it's less expensive and much handier. Four stars because the optics and image quality aren't excellent, but they're pretty darned good. ------------ This camera replaces a Canon Powershot SX60HS bought 11 years ago. I'm not a even a semi-pro photographer, I am just a snapshotter; that said, I love this camera. It will NOT take images of the quality one would get with a high-end DLSR and a pro-quality zoom, but I can carry it in one hand while hiking and bring it up fast to catch a bird on a tree limb before it flies, or a lizard pausing momentarily under a bush. The big zoom brings distant subjects close, and with "pretty-good" resolution. In fact, the SX70 gives much better image quality than my old SX60. The peephole viewfinder on the SX60 never worked well for me, so I always had to use the LCD screen, but the SX70 works well with peephole or screen. Judging by my experience with the SX60, I do not expect this camera to be an all-weather, any-abuse device (get an Olympus TG Tough for that) -- I damaged my SX60 by using it unprotected in dripping-wet humidity, and eventually the image-stabilization function went crazy and had to be disabled. That said, I do expect the SX70 to be reasonably sturdy under considerate usage (though I notice that the barrel holding the zoom is plastic on the SX70 instead of aluminum as on the SX60). The camera has the standard threaded socket for a tripod mount, though if the tripod requires a plastic shoe to attach to the camera then the shoe will block battery-and-SD card access. There is a jack for an external mic (necessary if shooting multimedia outdoors, as the internal mic loves wind noise). There are also ports for USB and HDMI. The supplier shipped the camera along with one battery, a battery charger, a shoulder strap, and a lens cap. It did not have an owner's manual; that can be downloaded in PDF online. Edit: On my second outing with the camera I found that taking the lens cap off sometimes pulled the small plastic ring around the lens off as well (this is the ring marked "Canon zoom lens 65 X 15"). Reattaching the ring is not difficult but requires a small blade to press the last of the three tabs into place. I put tiny dab of cyanoacrylate glue under the ring, reinserted it, and am hopeful that this prevents the problem.

Love it
First off, full disclosure: I am a full amateur with a reasonably good eye who basically used just the auto setting and zoom. Pros or those who think they're pros may have additional info regarding other settings. My rating is based on my amateur status and the sad fact that I did not know how to do much more than point, frame, zoom, and be patient. I bought this camera after a lot of reading for a recent safari trip to Tanzania. It worked beautifully. The zoom was good enough for pretty much everything (the animals cooperated by coming close, ha), though yes, holding steady when at full zoom isn't easy. I knew the pressure for photos was on me; neither my husband nor older son were going to take many pics—indeed, they just brought their phones—and my younger son had a good but older camera with less of a zoom capability. Fortunately, this Canon did not disappoint. The only thing I added was an inexpensive shade thing that fit over the lens. Not sure if it made a difference; I just put it on and left it there. So thankful that I made this purchase, yay!

Great photos and ease of use.
I love this camera. It is everything I wanted in a versatile camera. Easy to carry, the telephoto is great. I'm a birder and have taken some great shots with this. I have been impressed with the quality of the images and have no complaints with ease of use. Canon delivers even with this size camera.

compact & easy to store
The image quality is actually pretty good for a camera of this type. You can make decent 13X19 prints if you don't crop to much. It does not compete with a DSLR when it comes to image quality, but it makes a decent travel camera for snapshots and an occasional enlargement. It is lightweight and easy to carry around while traveling. It is important to understand that with a powerful zoom lens like it has, you have to be aware that it is sometimes difficult to get good photos because of camera movement, which is sometimes a problem with a lens with this much magnification.

Camera quit on the 2nd day. Returning the paperweight.
I got it brand new for a reason. I also own other Canon products that are old and still going. You'd think any camera over $500 that's brand new would work, right? I wasn't expecting mind blowing pictures for that amount, but I wanted something better than my Canon PowerShot SX720 HS (which was cheaper, a few years old, has been through desert and ocean trips, abused, and still works). First day, I was pretty happy with the camera. Booted right up. Zoom was nice. Having a screen and viewfinder was nice. Read the manual to help guide me through what was what and set up. Zero problems. So I made sure it had the latest firmware update, made sure everything was working, turned it off, and I was going to really test it out the next day so I made sure the battery it came with was fully charged. 2nd day, booted it up and started taking pictures. Soon after the screen started acting up in different ways (lines, blurring, miscolored screen), the camera froze, and then shut down. Odd, so I started making going through all the trouble shooting procedures. I followed one video's suggestion and it worked. Took pictures with no problem. Next day, it acted like day #2 all over again. I then ordered a new Canon battery for it and new SD card like so many videos and forums suggested thinking maybe I could use the first trick but with new items just in case something was corrupted. Didn't work. I've been trying everything to get it to turn back on just to get the zoom lens retracted and it still doesn't want to turn on. I really wanted this camera to come back to life b/c I really liked it when it worked. I'm highly disappointed at the quality control for Canon at this point. Returning item.

Liking this camera more every day.
After many months of enjoying my Panasonic hi-zoom cameras, I wanted something even more powerful and went for the Canon SX70. Negotiating the new learning caurve has been challenging, but I become happier every day as photos continue to improve. Really like the zoom lens. Colors are great. Miss my touch screen on the FZ300 and I like the menu system better on the PANASONIC, but for results, I think the SX70 may win out. Check me again in 6 months.

Best camera for bird photography
Writing a review after 3 months of usage. Firstly, this is not a "dslr". It's point and shoot camera. I bought it for bird/wildlife photography. And I must recommend this camera if you want to capture birds or insects or even butterflies. Zoom feature is simply superb and can capture distant objects at ease. Image stabilization is good within 65x zoom limit. If you want to go beyond that, I suggest buying tripod or gorilla pods. Learning the various modes is so easy and camera adjusts most of the things for you like there is auto for every setting. Finally, if you love birds and tiny objects, this camera by canon is my first suggestion. I am satisfied with its performance in this price range. The only drawback is battery life. I felt charging it quite frequently. But the rest is perfect.
