Danger above and below the water
The title of this movie is a little nondescript, but it masks a quite decent thriller of a movie. “Hunter Killer” seems to be two movies whose foci are combined into one. The first focus of this movie is on the events surrounding a USA navy submarine, under the command of Gerard Butler, who, following the successful outcome in an altercation with two Russian submarines, is ordered to affect the escape of the Russian president from a Russian navy base in the polar region of Murmansk. The president has been held captive by a Russian rogue army general who is intent in starting a war with the USA – but making it look as if the Americans had fired the first shot and thus be held responsible for starting a world war. Assisting the American submarine’s rescue of the Russian president is a captured Russian navy commander, played by Sven Nyquist. His role is to navigate the American submarine through the dangerously mined waters of the Sea of Murmansk that protects the Russian naval base. His speaking role is minimal, and most of his communication with the Americans is by looks and some form of common naval gestures. The second focus of this movie is about a group of USA navy seals whose orders are to sneak through Russian lines to rescue the Russian President from the rogue Russian officers who are holding him captive at the Russian naval base. If the navy seal’s operation is successful, then their team would rendezvous with Gerard Butler’s rescuing submarine. This section of the movie has moments where it is wise to suspend belief at the method and ease with which the rescue is undertaken. The action of the movie skips from one story to the other and, whilst the changes could be a little confusing, the film manages to achieve this aim without spoiling the film’s enjoyment. Indeed, this is a surprisingly captivating thriller of a film, with few low moments, sequences above and below the water that stretch the imagination, with acting that just manages to stay on the positive side of the credible. It is one of Gerard Butler’s better roles, although Gary Oldman as the American naval chief, is a little over-the-top in his role. Nyquist is quiet and brooding as the Russian naval officer but makes a good contrast with Butler in scenes that are generally understated. There is an effective soundtrack to the movie and some excellent oceanic photography, real and contrived, although the underwater photographic scenes are a little on the dark side and display an almost unbelievable ability to navigate a submarine through iceberg-filled waters. This movie is well worth a look and is a good addition to the myriad of films dealing with the, generally successful, exploits of the USA navy.

Not A Bad Film
It's not a bad film, but a little far fetched, A good cast with a good storyline but as I said a little far fetched. It's mainly about a Russian coup and a couple of Subs(US/Russian) get caught in the middle and have to work with each other to prevent all out War. It's worth a watch if you have time but wouldn't say it's as good as 'Crimson Tide' or 'The Hunt For Red October'.

Huge fun
This is one of those stylish movies Hollywood seems to churn out effortlessly and is huge fun. Butler is, as always, great in this kind of role, maverick captain of a submarine who takes huge risks and they always come off. The story line is pretty daft, though these days I do feel anything can happen, mad Russian general kidnaps his President, sinks one of his own subs so it looks as if the US have done it, in order to start a war. Gary Oldman plays the Chief of Staff, or whatever, and strides around insisting we go to Defcon 1 and he is held back by a wiser head and a sassy woman (natch). Butler rescues the captain of the stricken sub who has survived and together they head towards the naval base to rescue the Russian president. Already a SEAL team on the ground led by a gang ho leader, is there any other, played by Toby Stevens with an appalling American accent. You get the feeling he knows just how daft it all is but is having fun. Well in the end all is sorted, war is averted etc etc and the whole thing is potty. BUT I loved it!

Gripping action, Sea & Land thriller
Sold and delivered by Amazon, undamaged. New, and shrink wrapped; heavily discounted price. Highly under appreciated large scale production. Superb photography, and effects involved in Submarine, Warship, Missile attacks; with well executed choreography for a covert mission to Russian naval base, to rescue the Russian President, who has been captured by a Russian minister, with his military team, intending to orchestrate a nuclear war between the US and Russia. Gerard Butler is always worth watching(Den of Thieves, Greenland, The Vanishing - to name three) and the supporting cast are convincing, rather than mainly "set furniture"; although Gary Oldman spends a lot of his screen time just shouting and running across the sets. I found this superior to the paddling "Hunt for Red October", and the better "Crimson Tide", which I have on DVD. Excellent image, better than some older, especially the "Waxy", Blu Ray films I have, and Audio. I agree with the Mrs, that this is the best Submarine action thriller to date. Purists will be pleased to hear, in the background, the line, "Engineering, Dive, Dive" - but, alas, only once! Should have taken more money, deserved to take more money; and similar success to the "...Has Fallen Trilogy". Highly recommended!

A modern and great submarine film reflecting current events
I truly do not understand why people trash this film, the Hunter Killer is a great thriller that takes place not just on the latest USN submarine, but also on land, giving it a good balance. Gerard Butler is very good in it, not playing the usual though guy character, but someone who actually thinks before he does something! Unfortunately it was one of the last films in which Michael Nyqvist starred,in this case as the Russian Captain rescued, he died before the film was released. Gary Oldman was OK, far from outstanding, as for Lonnie Corant Jaman Shuka Rashid Lynn aka Common, the former raper, was passable while, Toby Stephens was very good too as a Navy Seal leader.

A shining example of the capability of UHDs
End to end there were so many audio and visual treats taking great advantage of the format, like deep black usage under water with clear visibility, dark outdoor scenes with bright spotlights in the back, aerial overhead sound panning, lower to upper sound tracking, great bass, cracking explosion and gunfire, and great thunder effects in a night air drop, and some really impressive modern naval live fire. Just a great watch. I enjoyed the story too. I admit I am so out of touch with what is cool and good but this movie ticked every box
