Rogue Trader [DVD]

Amusing account of the Barings Bank collapse
This movie is based upon Nick Leeson's personal account of events associated with the collapse of Barings Bank. The movie really does not give you a direct understanding of the events. A person really needs to read a document that is freely available through an internet search. Look for "Chapter 7 Barings Bank PLC: Leeson's Lessons".That document is really excellent and it does an exceptional job of helping the reader understand all the facets that went into the collapse. Rogue Trader is an interesting accent to the article, but not the other way around. The movie gives you a good idea of what Nick's perception of the events was. But that is the limit of its usefulness. If you want to really know what happened in the collapse of Barings Bank, you need to read the article described above.

Great movie for all traders to see!
Ever daytrader (or every trader, even) should watch this movie. True story of a guy who single handedly brought down one of the oldest banks in the world by not managing risk!

Loved this movie
Loved this movie, it very well showed the human side of a greedy guy, and showed where this greed led to blowing up an institution; acting was great and dialogue felt real. Tango, Murder, and Money by the Bay: Rick and Florrie Dance, Bullets Fly

Great movie
Saw this many years ago and rented the VHS more times than I care to admit. The story still very much resonates today-perhaps even more so. I am now working in the financial/collections industry so was refreshing to actually understand what was going on despite the technicalilties portrayed from time to time here. For an 'older' movie, the picture quality to DVD wasn't too bad and Mc Gregor's performance held the movie together quite nicely. Strong performances all round, actually. DVD came in very good condition also and on time. A movie that is watchable more than once

Excellent movie!!
I recently became a big fan of Ewan McGregor. While I was looking through all the movies he's been in and reading the reviews, I was unsure whether to buy this. Not having any knowledge of the stock market, I didn't know if I'd like it.Not only did I wind up loving this movie, it made me very interested in how the stock market works. Ewan McGregor's performance was amazing. I wasn't bored for even a minute. There were no drawn out parts at all...making this movie only 90 minutes was a plus. It was fast paced and exciting. Anyone who likes gambling, even a little bit, could relate to this movie. I was unexpectedly surprised how good this movie was. If you're not a fan of Ewan McGregor....you'll probably become one. I've watched this movie twice already within a few days so I'd definitely recommend buying it.

Gambling With Other Peoples' Money Is Fun If You're A Rogue Trader
When the Great Depression ended the US government passed legislation to prohibit commercial banks from gambling with your money. Years later Alan Greenspan, the Fed chief, a devotee of the dangerous philosophy of Ayn Rand, convinced the Congress and President Clinton to revoke the legislation. Ewan McGregor, who plays the rogue trader for Barings Bank in London, ends up in a Singapore prison for having too much fun gambling with Other People's Money. which forced Barings Bank to sell the bank to a bank in the Netherlands at a huge loss.Do giant money center banks need to be regulated? What do you think?

Good movie
This is a good British style movie that illuminates the bankrupting of one of the world's biggest banks because of the reckless actions of a single employee.

Good story for the uninitiated .....
The good thing about this films is it can be enjoyed on several different levels. I don't mean that in an artistic pretentious way, I mean for example there's a whole morality issue developing here, there's also a little bit of the mechanics of trading explained, and there's simply the drama of the film. For example you don't have to understand the concept of margin calls to enjoy the film not do you have to be an economist to understand what Nick Leeson was trying to do in making the market. It's an easily understood film and the resulting behaviour and crises that develops can be facinating for anyone and everyone on many levels. The morality of what happened is another concept all together. Good film. I'm just let my son who's started economics and is having thoughts of being a broker, watch this. It's a good film for showing how things can quickly spiral out of control and the fear and greed of the markets can be seen clearly. Compulsive watching for anyone aspiring to go into this world.

Brilliant movie! A classic example that fact is stranger than fiction
Great movie! Fact is stranger than fiction. Intriguing from beginning to end. Nick was taught a hard lesson. Barings banks was taught a harder lesson, the fools! All round, highly recommend watching this depiction of a true life event. 100% recommend

good Film
Pretty good film this with a bunch of actors at the top of their game in a story too far fetched to be true??Highly recommend it.

How Nick Leeson Brought Down Barings Bank and Shook the Financial World
So here we are in 2014 and can only conclude that man will never learn. This is the story that should have stopped the 2007/2008 crises from happening but didn't. An eye opening film with good acting tha give you an insight into private banking and how amateurishly it is conducted. Will it happen again? Without doubt I am afraid. See it,learn and be prepared the next time around.
