The entire wind sculpture including the pole and its fixture is made of pure copper with brass hardware. The only metal is the stainless steel ball bearings that are completely covered by brass hardware. Two ball bearings separately located at the top and bottom of the spinner make the entire structure move with a slightest breeze. The pole is made of heavy gauge copper and secured into the ground by an all copper 4-point anchoring system. With its heavy duty construction, this kinetic sculpture can withstand strong winds. The wind catchers and arms are not coated and will age naturally. If you want to preserve its original copper shine, you may spray a layer of clear coat on it. How often do I spray?** A: I sprayed the pieces before I put it together, and I only sprayed the sculpted wind cups part, the rest of mine is a nice patina brass finish. I didn't think it would be a good idea to get the spray on the moving parts as it might interfere with it moving. We have enjoyed this for many years now. It's our favorite yard art! **Q: How does this stand up to heavy snow in Chicago?** A: It is top heavy for stand wobbles in high wind. The copper is terrible it spots in rain and has to be cleaned if you want the shine. I am very disappointed for the price. I should not have any worries at this price. **Q: Mine stopped spinning. What can i use for a lubricant?** A: Make sure the spinner is level. If you have used a lubricant in the past, dirt and grime may have built up. I suggest to take the spinner apart and clean out the ball bearings with something like WD-40 and leave it at that. **Q: how does the bearing attach to the pole? Is it exposed or covered and how is it covered?** A: Each of the fins attaches to the pole with a set-screw and then when all the fins are attached it sits on the sealed bearing, which makes all the fins spin together, it is very well made and moves easily in the wind, but needs to be in a slightly windy area. Though the weather has taken a little of it's lustrous glow down to a slight tarnish (but not rusted), it's still beautiful. And note, we have not attempted to clean it in any way. This particular model, which is top heavy (the pieces pile on top of each other) doesn't spin as freely as the centric models, with the wheel shape. We also have one of those, and it's constantly spinning. However... this model is so beautiful we don't mind - it's always a pleasure to look at. And when a direct wind hits it - the whole thing spins prettily and is very fun to watch. The weather in mid-NC has not damaged this sculpture at all. It's stable against high winds (only fell over once, with a hurricane) and easy to put back together if it does fall over. The pieces are quite heavy, so they don't go far should fall. I highly recommend this product.
