By James Duke - Anesthesia Secrets: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access: 3rd (third) Edition

I just received this book and I recommend it even if you aren't interested in anesthesia, it references quite a bit to physiology and pharmacology which for me since step I is long forgotten.. so it is a nice refresher and sure to cover easily a few questions that won't just show up on rounds but on the boards.. here is a sample of the topics covered: I. BASICS OF PATIENT MANAGEMENT 1 AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM 2 RESPIRATORY AND PULMONARY PHYSIOLOGY 3 BLOOD GAS AND ACID-BASE ANALYSIS 4 FLUIDS AND VOLUME REGULATION AND DISTURBANCES (for me acid base/ fluids and electrolytes) have been somewhat of an Achilles, so glad it is covered here.. 5 ELECTROLYTES 6 TRANSFUSION THERAPY 7 COAGULATION 8 AIRWAY MANAGEMENT 9 PULMONARY FUNCTION TESTING 10 VOLATILE ANESTHETICS anyhow the list is quite lengthy. with this book you'll also be given a code to student consult, so if you are at home with your laptop you can just do your studying there... I haven't gotten past respiratory and pulmonary physiology but this book is extremely well written and I look forward to finishing it.. I am also supplementing it with Anesthesia unplugged, which is really quite a humorous addition...

This is the best in OR reading I have found. I simply cannot focus on a large text or journal articles during a case. I enjoy reading the one paragraph Q&A style. I feel I extract a learning point per question without ignoring my surroundings. Yes, many of the concepts are simple and fit for medical students. But there are numerous, numerous sections that delve into more advanced concepts that are worth reviewing routinely. In fact, one of my attendings is picking up a copy just for 'quick review'; both for themself and to better pimp residents and students on the 'hardcore basics'. Would buy again.

This is a must have for anyone in the anesthesiology profession. It is streight to the point.

Great book for review of cases especially if you have limited time. Preceptors like to use this book to pimp you. Easy read, inclusive. Would recommend.

Lots of "pimping" questions in this book. Definitely good for quick studying in the lounge or during a long case.

I purchased this book to review for the MOCA exam. It appears to have a great amount of pertinent information, however, the font is quite thin and vertically elongated, so I found it difficult to sit down and review from it. This will make a great reference for specific questions, but to sit down and just read, make sure your glasses are on. I am going to have to purchase a different review book because of this issue.

compact and succinct without extraneous verbage. not much explanation of concepts will be found here, just the facts and pearls of this science. great for board exam preparation!
