Absolutely Great!
I bought two of these because I have a lot of pills to split and some I keep upstairs and some downstairs. I have used both to cut hundreds of pills with no problem. Unlike a lot of pill splitters, this actually has a blade that ensures sharp, mostly clean cuts. I read all the reviews on dozens of pills splitters and all of them had detractors while others swore by them. Thus, there was no clear direction on which one to buy. Finally, looking at the number of positives and the actual comments, I decided to try this one. I'm so glad I did. It has functioned beautifully and shows no sign of breaking or wearing out. At first, it bothered me that the "tray" portion on which you place the pill (its V shaped) was of a silicone rubber material that didn't allow smooth sliding of the pill into place. I think that was intentional in order to keep the pill from moving when you cut it, but it made it a little difficult for someone like me with big hands and fingers and not particularly good motor skills to maneuver it into place. I needn't have been concerned because after you've cut a few pills, a slight film of "pill dust" accumulated on the little mat and it slides right into place at the cutting end of the V. Like all pill cutters though, getting oval or odd shaped pills into the exact place you want them is a little difficult. I've never seen one any better though. It doesn't really matter though, because if it is placed all the way into the apex of the V, you're still going to get 50% of the pill in each half. It's simple geometry when you think about it. I think this is well worth the price and does the job I need with no problems whatsoever. The little reservoir collects quite a few pill halves before you need to empty it and it's easy to do into your hand, so you can then pour them back into the bottle.

BEST PILLCUTTER I HAVE USED. READ REVIEW TO SEE WHY.
This is the best cutter I have tried and used; and trust me when I tell you that it has been many. I had one similar to this one but it finally broke. The mechanism for cutting the pill was exactly the same as this one with minor differences. Now when the old one broke I thought that surely in themany years I had used the same type, that surely somebody had come up with something easier than lining up the pill and hope you have it lined up correctly so it will cut exactly on the score. First of all you cannot cut a pill unless it is scored. I am an RNZ so you can believe that it is a fact. So I first bought the $29 one made of metal. However it is impossible to use on any shape of pill that is round. See in order to use it you have to stand the pill on its edge in order to line it up for cutting on the score. Then I tried one that had a little tray inside with a definite seperation of this tray and therefore making it easier to line up. Perfect right? Wrong. Every time I used it, it would crush, and splinter the pill. I tried everything to get it to work but no go. Okay now the differences between this one and the old one. The old one did not have a clear view when closed on the pill so you cansee if itโs lined up. The old ones tray came to more of a point than this one does. So a small round pill fits on the tray better. The old one I had to close it gently then pound it down to split the pill without shattering it. This one, you can just close it gently then tap on it and, Voila. The onle drawback on this one is the line down the middle to demark the center is not clearly seen. You have to eyeball it and that is nor accurate. However the advantages outweigh the dis ones. So there you go.

Probably the best pill splitter I've used, but still room for improvement
First, the good points. The rubber "fingers" hold on to pills very well, and will hold on to odd shapes. The "rubber" base also helps keep the pills in position as they are being cut. The big size gives lots of leverage, making it easy to split pills with minimal effort. It's easy to open with arthritic hands, without needing fingernails.g The tray in front holds a large number of pills. Handy if you are splitting a month's worth of pills. The bad: The plastic blade protector works well enough at first, but the plastic quickly becomes brittle and cracks, then gets caught when you are folding/spliting pills. And sticks when you are opening the pill splitter. And eventually, you just wind up ripping it off to get it out of your way. The blade seemed to get dull fairly quickly. It's not as easy to split pills now as when it was new.

works nicely, but fragile
I bought the two pack in April of 2013, and they worked great for these past seven months. However, the little plastic blade protector is now bent and the cutter won't open. So I pitched it. I have the second one and just shopped for a different brand, but none of the others are rated any higher and other reviewers are reporting the same issue. Bottom line, these are fragile and therefore expendable. Don't expect a long service life on an item this inexpensive.

THE BEST I'VE FOUND!
We split a lot of different sizes and shapes of pill--square, medium oblong, really large oblong, tiny and medium round--you name it; and, this is the best splitter I have found ever. I ordered two other splitters at or close to the same time as ordering this one. This one surpassed the others. I believe they are all made by Apex. The all blue basic one is okay, but sort of crushes some of the pills. The clear one with the orange bed would be my second choice, but the Ultra Pill Splitter by Apex Healthcare Products (2 pack) is the clear winner after trying all three. It is really sharp and quite easy to use and I get a more even split than with the others. Buy it. You won't regret it. Well, I bought this item (included two pill splitters) around July 13, or so. The first one broke about a month ago. I thought that was just a fluke. However, the second one broke yesterday, October 7, 2012. So, sadly, I dropped my rating from a 5 star to a 1 star. I believe this might just be a good concept that is a piece of junk. There is a plastic strip that covers the "blade" so you won't cut yourself, I suppose; although, I don't see how you could actually do that. That plastic strip comes loose inside the cutter and prevents you from being able to open the cutter to cut anything. So I must now say: DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!!!! You will regret it. It is a waste of money. Try the one with the orange bed. It is still truckin'. I'll let you know if it dies, too. Hope not. We need these things.

small but mighty
UPDATE: Still using the first of the Ultra Pill Slitters, it is still sharp and still providing me with a nice neat cut. One Thing.. make sure to "seat" the pill properly before cutting in order to get a good even cut. My dog need to take a dose of 1 and 1/2 of a particular pill. Even the vet admitted that they are all but impossible to cut. The cutter/crusher I had at home sure didn't work. The pharmacy said no.. they wouldn't cut any. So I came here to find something, counting on the reviews to find one that would work for me. I have been using the Ultra Pill Splitter By Apex Healthcare Products for nearly 2 months and it works like a charm. It is great to not have to worry that the dose isn't right, or to lose a pill completely by trying to use an inadequate tool. This comes in a two pack, and so I hope to find that they last me as long as he needs the medication. The first one shows no sign of wear. I have already recommended them to my vet, and now I recommend them to you.

Works very well!
This Apex Ultra Pill Splitter does a great job of splitting pills. I've split tiny Synthroid pills and giant Citracal calcium tablets, which are an oblong-oval-thicker in the middle than the ends, pill. The splitter worked equally well on both, and others. The trick is to be sure the pill is placed evenly into the point of the V and then not jiggle it around as you close the cutting lid. Sometimes the cut portions of the pill can pop out the back if you are holding it in certain positions. Keeping your hand is over the back edge prevents this. Also, setting the device flat on the countertop and holding your hand over the container as you close the lid and give a good press, is a good method. I ordered the two pack, one for me and one for my daughter and we are both very happy with the performance. I will order again if I lose or break this one or when the cutting blade becomes dull.
