Q: Are these waterproof?

I don't think they are but you could buy a waterproofing product and apply to them.

Q: What is the difference between these and the original, besides the insole?

The whole boot is lined with Thinsulate. Plus has the wool insole. These are supposed to be “water proof” whereas the original is just “water resistant” Also the grip on the bottom is a different design aswell

Q: is the thermal insole removable, such that the boot could be comfortably worn in the spring/summer?

fully removable. Very comfortable boot to wear in the wintertime!

Q: I am planning on living in Toronto where the snow (and salt) are known for destroying your feet and your boots! Will these survive??

As long as you keep them clean and conditioned (and waxed, if you like), these boots will survive anything.
