This seems like it would hold the attention of a 3-4 year old. Do older children really like it?

Oh, I'd say definitely too. My 4 1/2 year old daughter absolutely loves it, as does her 39 yo daddy. We've had games with her, the two 30something year old parents, and a 68 year old grandpa and all had a blast. One of the best features is that younger kids can play it alone, too, and have fun by practicing stacking the blocks. Or really anyone for that matter.

How many total pieces (animals) are there in the box?

There are a total of 29 Wooden animals.

Some reviewers say the pieces are too small; others say they're a good size. What is your opinion? Which version of the game do you have? Thanks!

We have the large version. The pieces are smaller than you might expect from the photos--remember these are children's hands you see, and the photo gives the illusion that the pieces are fairly large. Most of the pieces are 1 to 1 1/2 inches high. And they are very smooth, so they slip off each other easily. My 4 year old grandson is a master builder with blocks of all sizes, both wooden and plastic--but he reached frustration level very quickly trying to balance these. So, I would think twice about the age and dexterity of the child you are buying this for. That said, he did enjoy just playing with the pieces and telling stories. We like the concept, the wood pieces are nicely made, and we plan on having lots of fun playing the game itself, but probably not until he's 5.
