You can use it with direct contact with the charcoal.

Q: Can I bake bread on them?

The answer is yes, but what I think you're really asking is if you can EAT bread that you baked on them (and not die). The answer to that is... maybe? These aren't specified as food safe, so you should probably avoid direct contact with food. That said, you wouldn't want to use these as you're imagining. These bricks are meant to insulate. You'd make the floor or entire oven out of these bricks, but they are very heat resistant and don't have a ton of weight to them (compared to solid rock), so they take forever to heat up and hold little heat (food will suck the heat out quickly and you'll get uneven baking/cooking). You would probably want something more like a pizza stone that will hold heat better and is more thermally conductive as your actual baking surface. And such stones are usually specified as being food safe or not.
