Animals: A Visual Encyclopedia (Second Edition) (DK Children's Visual Encyclopedias)

Every Christmas we get an animal book for my son he’s very happy with this one. The pictures are vibrant and the layout is beautifully done. It’s not for little kids though (my son is 11).

I ordered 3 animal encyclopedias for our homeschool classroom as we are doing a couple years of Zoology curriculum. This was the one that I picked for our 8 year old daughter. The two things that I like best about this encyclopedia is the colored labels on the right side of the pages that designate "mammals", "birds", "reptiles", etc. Makes it easy for my daughter to find the animal she is looking for. I also like that every animal in the book has the scientific/Latin name underneath the name of the animal in English. The book is FULL of bright, crisp photographs and my daughters love looking through this book! My one complaint is that it is a soft back book and on the first day my daughter used it, the cover and biding pulled away from the pages :( I used some Tacky glue to reattach the spine and there have not been any problems since. It's just not as sturdy at a hard-back book.

I took the advice of other reviewers and ordered this book for my animal-obsessed daughter. She absolutely loves it. The photographs are sharp and beautiful, and the text holds her interest (she reads on a 5th/6th-grade level). The sections are color-coded along the edge, which makes it easy to browse, and the index is well-organized if you’re looking for a specific animal. This book would make a great gift for anyone who enjoys learning more about the animal kingdom.

My granddaughters age 8 and 11 love this book. They love animals so they are already naturally curious. They love flipping through the pages showing me the beautiful pictures and telling me facts they’ve learned. The book is beginning to have that “used” look so that tells me they must really love it. I noticed that they took the book to their camp recently.

The pictures are very good, but as a wildlife veterinarian I’ve found an absurd mistake in one animal taxonomy, there is a picture of a Boidae snake (not poisonous) and the description of a Viparidae (poisonous snake). They anatomy’s are completely different!And in the section of “cats of the world” is missing many other important felids as Jaguar (Panthera onca) classified by IUCN as endangered.So, it’s a good encyclopedia for kids, but it’s not very accurate or reliable for professional researches.

Great book if your child is interested in reading. Nicely organized. Good picture representation, pronunciation helper, size comparison with humans, fun facts, all are nice things about the book. Quality pictures. Must to have at home if you have kids above 6 year old. The only draw back is, the book cover is soft. I was expecting a hard cover. So 2-3 months into the use, the book starts to wear and tear.
