Q: do you have to have access to the internet or are all the instructions in the box?

You not only need the instructions but even more important you need the software programming system. You need to download software from Lego and install it on your Windows or Mac computer. This is about 600MB and has everything you need, instructions and programs for 5 robots, help system, programming system, user manual etc. Once you have installed this software you can use it without Internet connection. You can download the EV3 software without having purchased the set so you can read the instructions and try using the programming system before you buy anything. This is a great way to try before you buy. If you do not have Internet connection you can get a friend to download the 600MB software package and put it on DVD for you so you can install it on your computer to try it or to use it if you later on get the 31313 set. There are more robot designs produced by Lego enthusiasts and these can be found on the Internet and Internet is also useful for Lego software updates (but there have only been a few updates which were not critical). Once you have the 600MB software installed you do not need Internet to use the 31313 set. For a complete kit you need the 31313 set, computer with software installed, compartmented box for all small bits, 12 AA Eneloop type rechargeable batteries (6 in set at any time) and a charger which can charge at least 6 AA at a time. It's expensive in total but an exceptionally good set if the kid is interested and will last for years.

Q: Can this connect to a kindle fire?

I dont have a kindle fire but as I understand it - it is a cut down android system. If you already have a Fire look in the Google play store for the EV3 apps and see if the Commander App is there. Also the building instructions App. I use both on my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 but the building instructions will not work on my Sony Experia Z. Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Q: What sort of batteries are required? And how often?

For LEGO Mindstorms you need 6 x AA HR6 batteries. I'm using ENELOOP 1.900mAh rechargeable battery and they last from 5 to 6 hours of operation.
