Essential Judaism: Updated Edition: A Complete Guide to Beliefs, Customs & Rituals

A wonderful book, well researched and written in plain english. If, like me, you knew little about Judaism then this is the book for you. I read it in 4 days and was so impressed I am reading it again but more slowly. George Robinson has written a tour de force, the only problem is that I never read it before, still better late than never. Read and enjoy.

Covers the essentials and makes for easy reading whilst providing an invaluable referencebook. I have no hesitation in recommending this book to those who wish to understand Judaism beliefswithout having to trawl through "heavyweight" tomes.

I wanted a general overview of Judaism just to understand why it is different from other religions.It is good. Gave it 4 and not a 5 as it can be a bit verbose.

Essential Judaism is, as the title states, a complete guide - it compiles, traditions, rituals and prayers, gives an insight to probable variations within the various currents of judaism and is thorough without being boring.George Robinson writes in a pleasant, unaffected style that conveys the seriousness or more fun interpretations of the theme at hand.I'm studying judaism in a probable path to conversion and found this book immensely helpful.

It is an extremely comprehensive book, focussing on all the essential aspects. However the way is is written isn't the easiest to read, it just gives out too much information at once and sometimes it really requires ones full attention in order to follow the text.Anyway, having said this, I still recommend it strongly.

Painstakingly researched and lucidly written, this is a fascinating and encyclopedic, but never boring, work. Jews and non-Jews alike will benefit from this book.

It's a very comprehensive book, I am sure it is a great book if used as a supplementary textbook to some sort of conversion classes but for someone who just wanted to learn more about Judaism it has too many Hebrew words (there really are many of them and you can get lost in the text easily). I found it a bit boring but maybe I am not the target audience.

I have been making my way through each and every introductory text on Judaism, in order to do research for my own book on the subject. This is by far the best one I've come across yet, for people who like to get a full coverage of every conceivable topic. I highly recommend this book!
