Yes, definitely boil them. I boiled twice, allowing them to soak overnight in fresh water after the first boil, then rinsing and boiling a second time. They still stain the water with tanins, but not as badly. It's a very nice light tea color that you'd find in an Amazonian biotope.

Q: Would the wood be a decent size for a centerpiece in a 20 gallon?

I would get two packs if you really want to make it pop
