Useful for Studio Recording
This is going to be long, but I think this review might be more helpful than most.I bought the New Baxs CT60S with 6 XLR inputs in May 2025. I planned to use it as a preamp/submixer for my studio grade vocal and instrument microphones before multitracking.I read another review here saying the stereo pan function does not work. Fortunately, I discovered after a long series of tests that the mixer’s R/L panning knobs actually ARE functional. But they don’t work in any way that seems natural or intuitive. Basically, the headphone jack, aux and other unbalanced 1/4” ports are mono and the pan function does nothing when you’re monitoring from these buses. That’s a major drawback. But it WILL work. Remember this tip and it might keep you from returning your New Baxs mixer the next day: To get accurate stereo function, hook up the main XLR outputs to a pair of monitoring speakers or another mixer. Make sure it is a balanced XLR cord. One you’ve patched the main bus to a channel on your other mixer, you can pan using either the controls on the CT60S or your other mixer. The level indicators for dBFS are not a hundred percent accurate, so if you are using this with another mixer, be sure you hit the pad or main fader down 10-20dB. I was reading a difference of about 5-15 dB of gain between the two mixers. The mixer introduces a small amount of noise annd hiss even with proper gain staging. The noise floor seems a little bit higher than more expensive mixers, but never so high that it can’t be gated out for a truly professional sounding recording. Also, it’s possible this finding is due to the high level of gain this mixer can pull out of nearly any microphone, including dynamic microphones *without* inline preamps. Mostly what you’ll hear if you turn the gain all the way to the right is the HVAC powering up, your breathing, every time you swallow or move your tongue around in your mouth, the noise of air rushing through vents, a lawnmower or leaf blower two blocks away, every motorcycle or souped up sports car within a half mile, a gnat flying near your mic, your dog prancing down the hallway to get water and the sounds of cords slapping your mic boom arm. If you could turn it up higher you would probably start hearing ghosts. The gain is incredibly strong, full of detail, but warm and not metallic or tinny. I do believe it colors the sound a little bit with harmonics, as do a lot of budget analog mixers, but this is a favorable outcome for some. FX is kind of rudimentary, but it does work. Overall I would say the quality of the preamps is good.I give it four stars. Mainly I’m going to use it as a preamp for vocals before processing, but I might be able to use it for recording instruments with high detail as well.
