Q: Can these be used with paint, like Colour Shapers? Are they silicone?

It’s only for sculpting figures and details on fondant, modeling chocolate and gum paste. Just like a soft clay modeling tool. You can’t paint with it. Yes it’s like a soft silicone

Q: I cant decide whether to buy the soft tips or the firm tips. When do you use the soft tips and when do you use the firm ones in cake decorating?

These sets are very large heads and are good for working on large 3d cakes with a lot of space inbetween. But if you are doing facial modeling or figurines you may want to use the mini head set. I prefer the firm, ifind the soft is too flexible to move things around.

Q: What's the difference of this brand compared to other inexpensive brand/alternatives in the market?

I have some of the cheaper brands including an old set that came with a painting kit. These are easier to hold and color coded for easy identification. They come with a nice mesh bag if you want to wash or store the set. The material is the perfect match for fondant, gum paste or modeling chocolate. I can't say enough nice things about them. You will use them in so many ways if to work with sugar dough. Just today I used them to sculpt a Darth Vader head and they were perfect for the curves and lines on the face and for tucking ends of detail lines. Purchased mine directly from the company even with various other brands in the drawer. They just work better so you use them more often.
