Q: can it open big cans? like 6lb 15oz Hunts Tomato Paste

The amount of space between the blade part and the counter top is about 9 inches, assuming the can could fit in that space, I do think it would work. The magnet that holds the can in place seems fairly strong, I would say worst case scenario, if it fits, you may just have to hold the bottom while it turns to open it

Q: My current can opener gets bogged down or stops half way through. I think it is a weak motor. Does this one stop half way through?

This can opener has worked great so far. It opens the cans completely, it doesn't drag or stop in the middle.
