Q: Will this work to keep a kitten in a room?

If you have less than 3/4” gap under the door. However it is flexible depending on your mighty kitten strength.

Q: snakes have entered my lanai through the gap at the bottom of my screen door. Can this item work to close that gap?

Yes, works perfectly and attaches well to the door, not loosely.

Q: Can these be used on carpet as well, or will it get caught?

Yep they get caught up on the carpet but nothing really big. My apartment door used to shut on its own but since I installed this I have to shut it myself, but that's no problem for me compared to the benefit of this product. No more winter cold air coming inside.

Q: has anyone used this on door that opens into a higher rug from lower hardwood floor?

Yes, but there is a thing - if you adjust the strip height to the carpet, you will have a little gap at the hard floor level, so there will be draft and the weather strip won't be very effective. You will need to cover the gap with a draft stopper. I think you might be better off with a brush door sweep.
