I got it in one piece. I'd return it if I was you.

the total length of the tong is 9 1/2 inches, the widest part of your grasping 'hand' is 3/4 inch

Q: does it have a cover for the blade.?

It comes with a thin plastic sleeve. Not terribly durable.
