Time Out South of France: Provence and the Côte d'Azur (Time Out Guides) Paperback – March 24, 2009

TimeOut is a popular London weekly magazine, and they also publish numerous guidebooks to regions and cities around the world. All are excellent, and this one on the South of France does a good job detailing the large region of Provence and the a Riviera. It covers the standard sightseeing locales, as well as compressive hotel and dining options. Plus numerous insightful articles about life in this always fascinating region.

I took this book with me to Cannes, and although it was a good read on the beach, and it will tell you the history of certain regions in France, it is not really good enough to be considered as a travel guide. There is much more detailed and better info a few mouse clicks away on the internet. I know that these kind of books cannot have info on everything, but why did this one have to list so many museums and expensive hotels and restaurants? In most cases, it doesn't really mention how to properly get to those places, so I just referred to the aforementioned internet.

This book has some good illustrations (although it's not as well illustrated as the DK guidebooks) and it has some useful information that other guidebooks don't have. It's not updated every year, and the copy I bought this year (2013) was published in 2009. Therefore some of the hotels, restaurants and bars they recommend may be out of date. For up to date information on hotels and restaurants it's best to look at the Tripadvisor website. I was disappointed that this has such a small section about the Riviera. I wish Time Out would produce a guidebook that is just about the Riviera.

This is a very useful travel book. It covers the area well and is well produced, it has plenty of information for a visitor new to the area.
