A page turner at the very least
James Patterson's "NYPD Red" is the story of a special task force of the New York Police Department that looks out for the A-Listers who come to the city. Movie actors, producers, directors and other celebrities who need a bit of special protection are their assignments. Detectives Zach Jordan and Kylie Macdonald have their work cut out for them as partners when New York hosts "Hollywood on the Hudson" where beautiful actresses arrive on the red carpet along with TV and movie-making people who are famous around the world. There are showings of movies, interviews and all that viewers and attendees want to see. New York City is in the process of trying to recruit some of the entertainment business to their city from Los Angeles where most of it resides. NYC would love to lure some of the glitz and glamour for their own.All goes well until a well-known producer dies during his breakfast. Zach Jordan is the first cop on the scene from the NYPD Red unit and his partner, ex-girlfriend, Kylie Macdonald, is soon on the case, too. They can't afford to make mistakes on cases like this, so they go to work on the investigation. The killing doesn't stop here, though. As they team up and search for a deranged killer who has a plan all his own, it becomes more and more dangerous for those at the event, as well as for Zach and Kylie. This is a thriller full of suspense and never knowing what will happen next. There is a lot of action and the ending is an edge-of-your-seat finish to a book that doesn't let the reader relax for a minute.James Patterson has done an excellent job with this one, character-wise and story-wise. The dialogue is good and it is well-paced. Recommended for suspense/thriller/mystery readers.I'm looking forward to reading NYPD Red 2.

A master series creator
Patterson has done it again! With NYPD RED, the world's most prolific author is proving once again that he is also the world's most prolific series creator. What is this, his fifth, eighth series? Regardless, with the assistance of new and old co-authors (read actual authors), Patterson creates series launch books as quickly as he does individual series entries. This book is yet another in a long line of probable successes. As if the police procedural hasn't been done to death, Patterson and Marshall Karp (no doubt the collaborator for at least the first couple in the series) have created a fresh cast of characters completely different to Cross, Bennett, or Boxer. Kylie and Zach are a unique cop team with well-thought out pre-book lives as well as the potential for future conflicts; a perfect set up for a long-lasting series. Even the bad guy is different. Not as sophisticated as Cross' adversaries, not as psycho as Bennett's, and not as deeply disturbed as Boxer's, the NYPD Red nemesis is a simple mentally deranged killer. Because of that, he's not that tough to bring down. Which in a series opener is important because a lot of time is spent developing the main characters and their surroundings. There's simply not enough time to make the bad guy all that bad. Maybe they'll get better (or worse if you prefer) as the series continues. But don't get me wrong. This one's a hit. Like the Bennett series, it's a jump start to the earlier days of Cross and with Karp's input, should evolve into a unique and surprising act, eventually. Like the Private series, after a couple of entries, it will find it's own slot in the thriller genre and come of age slowly but surely.A lot is said about the prolific nature of Patterson and his cohorts, both good and bad. But there's no denying that most of the time (actually almost all of the time), he gets it right and astounds us with yet another breakout hit!

Someone is killing Super Stars and Movie Directors -- Why?
I'm late to the party for this series of books from James Patterson, but that doesn't mean I was disappointed in not having know about them. I just need to keep my eyes open better for future books in the series.NYPD Red is a specialized unit of Detectives in the New York Police Department who are tasked with solving crimes that involve or revolve around the wealthy, politically connected, or just plain old celebrities. In other words these Detectives and their Captain need to know how to handle the elite and their harsh personalities. In this first book of the series the city of New York is trying it's best to lure the Movie and Television Industry to come to New York and make more flicks there instead of in Hollywood. Unfortunately a disgruntled and disturbed individual wants to sabotage the week of events scheduled. So, this person sets about to start murdering people who are wealthy, connected and part of the Hollywood scene. At first it seems like just one murder, but as the bodies pile up the NYPD Red team his overdrive to try and solve the crimes. There are a bunch of little sub-plots that run through the novel involving the two main detectives, Detective Jordan and Detective McDonald. It seems they have a past dating relationship and that causes some issues. BUT, they are the top two Detectives in New York and they have a very unorthodox way of solving crimes, they break the rules!Having worked with police officers as a police chaplain I found the descriptions of the characters very accurate and reasonable even though people might think Patterson has exaggerated them a bit. Will Jordan and McDonald be able to stop this crusader / murderer before he or she can kill hundreds? That's the question and the heart stopping action will keep you reading.Enjoy!

Good read highly enjoyed
Patterson does it again. With a relatable cop partnership and a bad guy you kinda feel sorry for. Hope there are more in this series. The commentary between partners at times is hilarious, who doesn't want to laugh while tracking a serial killer.

Too perfect: formulaic and cliched pulp fiction that could have been written by a machine ...
If it's challenge, engagement, stimulation, and character development you're looking for then this isn't the book for you, because there's none of that in James Patterson with Marshall Karp's "NYPD Red", the first in their NYPD Red series. It's just action as two NYPD cops run around chasing a madman that's killing Hollywood stars, they fire a few shots, they get shouted at by the boss, and eventually they get their man but not until there's been a lot more running around, more shots fired and a major threat averted [sounds perfect for a low budget single big name movie].And that's it: short, sharp, but lightweight, formulaic, cliched, and above all completely forgettable [the Memsahib read this a few years ago when we were in NYC and can't remember a single thing about it] and that's why in many ways it's perfect, actually too perfect, pulp fiction, and that's also why it's only three stars.PS What is it about James Patterson that so many of his books are co-writes? Who actually does what? This book didn't need two people to write, it could have been written by a machine.

A quick read...Typical James Paterson ....Good but not his best.
I really enjoyed it!!! I always like the way James Patterson writes his stories. He writes for the audience. without having to work to hard to figure what the heck he's talking about. He gets in character or in many characters with out losing me. I can sit down enjoy his books after a hard day and get lost in the moment. In the case of this book I indulged it, it was hard to get out of the temporary bliss, when life called. From the 1st chapter to the last you were drawn in to the lives of the characters. The police, the would be victims, and the psycho path and the woman that would follow him to the end of the earth. I enjoy how he twisted a love story, a simple love story (nothing sappy), and suspense, on the part of the work of the detectives & the bad guy. You knew he was going to do something else , but what? You knew the detectives would catch him but how?I hope you enjoy it as much as I did

NYPD Red
This is my first time reading a crime book and the first time reading a James Patterson book. I was a little disappointed at the fact that, when I had seen it advertised all I saw was 'thriller' 'must buy', I don't think it was that thrilling, I liked the story line sure but when 'things happened' (trying to avoid spoilers) I didn't feel scared, I just thought oh, everything will turn out right. I loved the two main characters, a nice balance goes a long way with me and I felt they were balanced quite nicely. I recommend this book, just don't expect to be thrilled.

Cracking read
Another fast paced story with plenty of action from Patterson. The 2 main characters are believable and have a romantic background of their own. This leads to a few complications but is dealt with quite sympathetically by the author. The villain is painted as a man with delusions who is out to cause mayhem to the film industry in New York. He has a real grudge against the stars and the industry hierarchy having been turned down for many parts. It all comes together in a cracking finale.

Captured me from page 1!
I was doubtful about this having read some of the reviews but as a massive fan of his other books (mainly the women's murder club series) I decided to give it a try anyway. I'm so pleased I did - the book is written unbelievably well and the main characters (2 cops who have previously been a couple) are fantastic. The story actually kept me guessing, and the plot was exciting, adventurous and enthralling! I love how James Patterson writes as the first person, to me it's easier to get into the story, imagining that I'm there with them. I for one will certainly be reading NYPD RED 2 & 3! 5 out of 5!!
