Ireland's internationally acclaimed singer songwriter Eleanor McEvoy releases her latest album STUFF on the MOSCODISC label. An eleven track collection, Stuff tells tales of unrequited love, lust and eloquent farewell, a heady brew of caustic observation laced with wit and wry self deprecation typical of multi-instrumentalist McEvoy, all delivered in the Irish star's rich, lilting voice. Known for touring Europe in a black Hearse, Stuff somewhat reflects the content of Dublin-born McEvoy's current live ALONE show. The album includes her Soul groove, "The Thought of You", the acerbic 'Deliver Me', 'Little Look' (a collaboration with Polish a cappella group Banana Boat) and 'Lovers Chapel', recorded with (ex Beautiful South) Dave Rotheray's Homespun.' Stuff also includes a mournful reading of Chuck Berry's 'Memphis Tennessee', plus 'Milford', which McEvoy performs as a tribute to singer Edith Piaf and writer Georges Moustaki.

Eleanor McEvoy should have been a huge star. Her voice still carries some of the sound of Ireland and it is easy to image sitting in a Pub in Ireland and soaking up the sound and surroundings with her sitting there with a guitar and carrying you away. This is not her best album, but it is very good and songs such as The Thought of You, Please Heart You're Killing Me, and Take You Home stand well to her earlier work going all the way back to 1993's self titled album and the songs For You, Leave Her Now and Promises We Keep not to mention the sublime song Music of It All. If you have never heard Eleanor McEvoy sing, you have missed out on a musical treasure.

A collection of sought after tracks, rather than a themed contemporary album results in a bit of a rag bag
A collection of difficult to obtain tracks that fans had apparently requested, rather than a complete new contemporary album of fresh tracks. Overall Eleanor is in fine voice here, but it does come across as a bit of a curates egg, with some oddities thrown into the overall mix that are perhaps more of an acquired taste, interesting diversions but not essential, a prime example being the French version of Milord. There are a mixture of varied covers with alternative versions of her own songs on offer here. The production values are generally very high, Some of the new takes do add something special, a more multi choral version of Take a Little Look with Polish a cappella group Banana Boat is a personal highlight for me. But overall a lot of the tracks seem minor rehashes of what has gone before, and it smacks of marking time. I would prefer a contemporary album full of of brand new songs for the next release please. In conclusion some interesting stuff, overall good, but not an essential Eleanor album. For a good representative feel of her live solo shows the Alone album is the pick of her output, while any of the previous 3 or 4 studio albums are more typical of what she can offer, all with a smattering of new songs that have become Eleanor concert classics. She is always excellent live, with her beautiful lilting Irish singing voice making her distinctly different from virtually anyone else around, offering songs of sincerity, often self deprecating and confessional, sometimes with a serious political message to get across, she is a passionate committed performer, catch her live if you can.

Better than I expected and I know how good Eleanor can be. A lovely CD to sit back and listen to. You'll get nothing else done.

Disappointing
Hasn't captivated me so far. I bought it on the strength of the single "Please heart..." and there isn't another song to match it. Appears to be a mishmash of original songs and cover versions.
