Five Pillars of the Spiritual Life: A Practical Guide to Prayer for Active People

I stumbled across this book at the library and picked it up on a whim - I've read many books on theology/spirituality which, regrettably, I often put down after 30 or 40 pages. Many are often too simplistic (tired cliches or unsubstantiated pronouncements), or too dense (overly complicated or intellectually numbing). This book has the right balance - deeply thoughtful, yet accessible. Father Spitzer seems to have a genius for systematizing vast amounts of theological/philosophiclal thought into an organized and sensible format. I was thoroughly impressed by this compelling book that should be read by anyone interested in spirituality. And even if spirtuality is not your thing, it very well could be after thoughtfully assessing Father Spitzer's comprehensive treatise on the spiritual life. Simply put, this book is 166 pages of spiritual gold.

Excellent book of faith (Catholic) by one of my favorite religious leaders. He has a TV program on meeting of faith and reason on EWTN that is wonderful & is excellent for those of us that believe in an ancient Earth, et al. A unbelievable genius of unshakeable faith. He has a serious eye problem (think he is blind) that does not let him affect his witness or faith but rather turns it into an asset. This man is as smart as S. Hawkingsbut is the other side of the coin. My first of his books but hope to have all of his very soon.

Some books on spirituality are written at the superficial level. This one is not cumbersome and too wordy, but is also not a fly by sort of book. It requires closer reading and meditation, at least for me. And this is what I was hoping to get. The author was recommended by my mail carrier as having a variety of good media available. This is my first, but probably won't be my last.

After reading this book I took the author’s advice to attend daily weekday Mass and to go to Confession often.Going to Mass has become my happiest activity of the day. As I celebrate the Mass and go to Confession I feel closer to God and more authentic as a person. Highly recommend.

Seller: dj2151: I am not sure what you mean when you describe a book as' clean and unmarked." I chose this used book because the description included the phrase, "clean and unmarked." I only purchase unmarked books, as a rule, but when this one arrived, I found that some of the text had been highlighted. False advertising! Very disappointing! I expect the book itself, by Father Spitzer, to be another good book by this author, but I prefer to read unhighlighted books, occasionally highlighting for myself.

Fr. Robert Spitzer is a Jesuit Priest and President of Gonzaga University. I am an ordinaryLutheran homemaker. Still, Fr. Spitzer is my favorite spiritual teacher and author. He is obviously very devoted to Christ, EXTREMELY intelligent and thoughful, and full of humor and excitement about his faith and about life in general. Any Christian, Catholic, Lutheran or anywhere on the spectrum of Christianity, can greatly benefit from this book. You come away knowing that you are in the arms of the unconditional love of the Father of the prodigal son.Very simple and yet so profound.

This is the most compelling, powerful book on our Catholic religion I have ever read. The first chapter alone, on the Eucharist, sent me to attend mass daily, if possible. Fr. Spitzer has a way of stating strong messages without pushing or pressure. This first pillar, the Holy Mass gives us peace, transforms us and makes us one with the whole world. I had this book on loan from a friend, but when I was devouring it, I had to purchase my own copy. This book is for the serious-minded Christian. It is not for light reading, but rather for study and for putting into practice the most important aspects of growing close to Almighty God.

Studied, took notes on the TV series; had to have the book. Wonderful. Would make anybody happy.

Beautiful book So easy to follow. Watched the series on television and that is why I bought the book Can dip anywhere into the book . Really enjoy it throughout the year
