The workbook has been really nice to help him gain the depth and practice he ...
My son's Japanese teacher required that we purchase this book and the accompanying textbook before my son could start taking Japanese lessons. So far my son has found both helpful in his learning. The workbook is well organized and allows space to practice writing. It also includes a CD so the student can listen to the language and learn correct inflections, pronunciations, etc.Prior to purchasing the books and beginning lessons, my son was self-teaching. He learned a broad variety but not as in-depth as he needed to in order to really learn the language. The workbook has been really nice to help him gain the depth and practice he needs. He seems to enjoy using both books--that's an accomplishment!I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to begin learning Japanese.

Good workbook to reinforce your knowledge
I bought the textbook and it already has plenty of examples and practice questions after each chapter. It doesn’t hurt to buy the workbook to reinforce what you learned after each chapter, or use it as a refresher. I find that some of the practices questions from the workbook are similar to the textbook ones though. You can also download free pdf of this textbook instead of buying this (I bought mine before I found out the free download). However, it is still a good investment to have this to accommodate the textbook.

very good text book for self learner
This is a very good text book for beginner Japanese, especially for self-learner like me. The text book is printed in Japan, on very high quality paper. There are plenty of exercises after each lesson, in addition to supplemental exercises in the back. The work book is also highly recommended. There are very few grammar bullet points that are not explained in detail, one example I can think of is compound adjectives and sentence structure with omission of adjectives.I would highly recommend buying the Genki work book (separate) which will give you additional drills. Also, prior to hitting these two textbooks, I would really recommend the "Irasshai" series on georgia public radio website. I would do 5-10 of these video lessons before even begin on these text books, otherwise you may be lost if your exposure to Japanese is otherwise limited.Something to improve on (if there is going to be) a 3rd edition- the organization of the CDs can be much better; when I pop them into my computer, I just get a drive full of individual mp3- they should really be grouped by lessons. Also, I find the Hiragana/Kanji chart difficult to use, as you constantly have to flip back/forth. These should be made into two sheets of chart that can be tear off from the book; so the learner can have it in front of them when they need to refer to them initially.

A decent workbook for Japanese
I've used this workbook to learn Japanese, along with the Genki I course book. Both in school and to brush up outside of an academic setting. The book has a number of exercises needed to learn the Japanese language. Used by a number of colleges and other schools. I don't know how it ranks with other language textbooks, but I find it very helpful and worth getting if interested in learning the Japanese language. I personally had to buy a second workbook to keep a copy of the exercises.

Great way to practice what you’ve learned in the Textbook
I love the Genki series. The workbook came in great shape and so did the CD. You don't necessarily need to have this workbook but if you don’t have anyone to practice with and no one to test/grade you then you should probably get this book.Once you're done, if you don’t have anyone to grae you, you could grade yourself with the workbook answers online somewhere.頑張ってください

I really like this second edition
I really like this second edition!I would suggest that the reader/learner learn Hiragana fully before they begin lesson 1, and then learn Katakana before they begin lesson 2. Otherwise learning can be frustrating. Once you've got those down then I would also suggest going through each lesson without the audio cd. Do every party on paper, then do the work book, then go back to the beginning of the lesson and use the CD (to give you another round through the lesson). The best way to learn is by repetition and this book has a lot of material, but if you do it right then it really is a good book! And the workbook is a must have if you're getting this to practice on your own and not just for a textbook for school.
