Monty Python's Life Of Brian - The Immaculate Edition

A Python Classic Looking Surprisingly Good
I love the film and couldn't "not" upgrade given the low price. I was skeptical whether or not a film such as this would even benefit from a high resolution transfer, as I'm sure this was not a high budget production to begin with. Seeing as my expectations were low on the video quality department I was pleasantly suprised at some of the improvements. The color palette was greatly improved (nice, blue skies in the outdoor scenes) and there was a lot of added detail without too much (any?) removal of film grain. I've only watched the work print outtakes, which I'd seen before, but for the cost (under $7.00), if you're a fan of the film, I'm not sure there's any room to complain or wish for more.

Standard Monty Python
Movie 6 of 1979 and 66 overall in my journey through films of my lifetime. There isn't really a lot to say about this one. Mostly because if you know your "Monty Python" then you know what to expect. Like Mel Brooks films these are best taken in small doses IMO. For some reason I felt the humor in "Life of Brian" wasn't at the same level as "The Holy Grail." Still you do get a great dose of that humor that you would expect. One thing I'll mention is that "Monty Python" humor is actually quite intelligent. This is hidden because it seems to mix in so much silliness. I'm sure this is deliberate and I think it's brilliant. In the end I was honestly a little bored. It's possible it was my mood but I can't be sure. If you like their humor I'm sure you can't go wrong. From the perspective of Gen X I'd say that many of us are well exposed to the lads from Britain's humor. I know few people my age that haven't seen at least some of Monty Python's work even form the "Flying Circus."Pros-the humor you know and love is intactCons-slow-some humor seemed repetitive

Hysterical, irreverent, poignant and just as fresh as the day it came out
The picture quality of this remastered Blu Ray version is superior to all the lower resolution formats and the surround sound is very good for a film of this age.. it also comes with an interesting BBC documentary, that the boys send up in their own particular “idiom”. As witty, silly, thought-provoking and poignant in its commentary both about how we misunderstand and distort religion, and fail to unite ( with a brilliant lesson in Latin, as well!) this film’s wry commentary even on terrorism is as relevant, and as hysterically funny - imagine whom else could accomplish that?- as ever. Highly recommended, and always look on the bright side of life!

Always look on the bright side of life
Fantastic movie. If you are a fan of Monty Python this is a must own in your collection. The whole Python gang is at it's best and on their game. I absolutely roll every time during the scene with Ceasar speaking to his guards with his speech impediment. I definitely feel like a little giggle when he says "Bickus Dickus". and yes, throw him to the floor again please. You can't make this stuff up....but they can.

Just plain brilliant!
"But I'm not the messiah! Go way!" ...I swear I have laughed at MONTY PYTHONS stuff for years. The dry humor and Simi-slapstick is just endearingly hilarious. It seems I never get tired of it! And my son, (a very different generation indeed) finds this British wit hilarious as well, we wholeheartedly agree on this...one of the very rare things, believe that! It's clean fun. If a bit blasphemous, (ha ha). Review time:A man called Brian...not a very impressive name for, well, the supposed son of God. But Brian is just a young man trying to make the leap from adolescence to manhood and escape his mother's skirts (an ugly, but loving harlot played by Terry Jones) He unwittingly stumbles into circumstance after circumstance, that, - even though he tries to convince everyone he is just an ordinary guy- seems to thoroughly convince everyone that he is the second coming...a hero to save the masses, to brake the yoke of the Roman empire on the oppressed. The side busting antics are still bringing tears of laughter to my eyes and I've probably seen it, like, a hundred times! Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin, the core group of MP are all here and in their heyday. This IS comedy at it's best. And no gross outs, no farts, no F bombs every other word...just plain Ol' brilliance.

Funniest scene in movie history "Biggus Dickus" . Absolutely inspired, irreverence without blasphemy. This is a classic.
Inspired, hilarious and prescient at so many levels it is sometimes hard to believe. Monty Python, again, creates a movie that can be laughed at and thought about forever. Sight gags, word gags, quips and characters are so memorable as to be virtually immortal. I think that the "Biggus Dickus" scene will be remembered forever in movie history. Same with the "Peoples Front of Judea" and "Who threw that stone". What catapults this movie into true greatness, though, is not the comic genius. The greatness of this movie is how it commends one to consider religion in context. For example, the scene where Brian is chased and loses a shoe. If that is not prescient and illustrative, I do not know what is. This movie can be appreciated on so many different levels for so many different reasons by so many different people, that it almost defies belief. If you never saw this movie, see it.

E's Not The Messiah, E's A Very Naughty Boy
Just another fabulous Monty Python comedy. I remember seeing it in the theater as a teenager and laughing my butt off, and now having watched it again for the first time in over 2 decades, it still packs a lot of laughs for the money. It's so weird that what was so risque back then seems so humdrum today. This package ("The Immaculate Edition" Blu-ray) contains some really fun extras including a list of deleted scenes that I really think most people will agree would have made the whole film better had they been left in ... per the commentary, they were deleted mostly just to speed up the film & reduce the running time, rather than for any artistic / story-telling reason. Seems so funny to me that they were so concerned about our short attention spans back then, whilst in today's ADHD world we regularly receive and watch 3 hour long motion pictures! :-DI would call this a 4.5 star effort, rounded up since The Zon doesn't let us post half stars.

Not quite 'immaculate' enough...
This edition is, alas, not quite as `immaculate' as its subtitle suggests - mainly because, for some reason, the 1979 BBC on-location documentary, `The Pythons' - an extra on previous DVD issues of `Life of Brian' - is not here to be found - despite clips from it appearing in the new documentary, and snippets from its soundtrack being used on the extras menu. Had this been squeezed onto Disc 2, along with the 9/1/79 edition of TV chat show `Friday Night, Saturday Morning', in which Cleese and Palin faced `Life of Brian' critics Malcolm Muggeridge and Mervyn Stockwood in heated debate, plus perhaps the `Not The Nine O'Clock News' parody of this legendary encounter, it would have made this set a truly immaculate conception.
