Difford's Encyclopedia of Cocktails: 2600 Recipes

I didn’t appreciate all the other reviews talking about the small print until I got this- I mean I’m not elderly!- but it is a tad annoying. I wish it had a better index. I do like that it has cocktails I don’t see in other books. Given that there doesn’t seem to be anything out there that truly lists all the cocktails, I use this and one other and feel like I have it covered.

My husband makes drinks from this every day, it truly has been an excellent gift choice. He loves the clear images and instructions, the anecdotes, and just wishes the index in the back was more inclusive allowing you to look up drinks with any liqueur or mixer in rather than just having the main ones listed...but the book would probably have been too heavy to lift 😉

Difford's Encyclopedia of Cocktails is perhaps the finest bar book I own out of at least a dozen others. It is beautifully presented in color with the finest paper and the photography is second to none. There are 2600 different drinks to choose from. The drink recipes are clear and consice, from the type of glassware, the garnishes, even the amount of ice to use. There is no guessing on weather the drink should be shaken, stirred, layered, muddled, or served on the rocks.The dictionary section lists are extensive, even giving the history of the specific types described. No, you do not have to be a professional mixologist to understand the book, and it deserves a five star rating.

From outlining basic bartending skills & tools to providing a gamut of recipes and quotes from many notables the Diffords Encyclopedia is good Also the author gives nods to authors on many other books on cocktails and in this way helps round out the tome.But there are also many typos and the font sizes aren't the best for someone who may want to pore over the minute detail hidden in the back of the pages. This isn't typical to the entire book but for someone who buys this for work reasons it makes a difference for judging its overall usefulness.

Its a great resource for starting out and exploring. It has a star rating for all the cocktails but we don't bother anything under four starts as there really are some awful cocktails out there - mostly from the 70s and 80s!it would be nice to have a bit more space around the recipes to write some adjustments for taste, as we do modify a few of the recipes.

It was a Christmas gift for our son, and he tells us it is thorough, easy-to-use, and accurate. He is very happy with it.

Truly the best book for mixing cocktails that I have ever seen to date. Easy to read. Great pictures. Great explanation. Great collection of ingredients. A central feature in my book collection. Everyone loves to browse through it for ideas when they come over. Two thumbs way up!

She seemed a little overwhelmed at first by the size of the book and the vast numbers of cocktail ideas and recipes. Undaunted she picked the most obscure (forgotten what it was!) and shook it up for the next party!
