The Timeless Dominic: A Commentary on the O Lumen Paperback – November 11, 2015

Wonderfully written book.

The Timeless Dominic has proven to be an enlightening, uplifting, and altogether necessary reminder of the life, teachings, and work of St. Dominic. Fr. Richard T.A. Murphy, O.P. justly praises and honors this “Light of the Church” and invites readers to share in his life of spirituality and of virtue. The way in which Fr. Murphy approaches his discussion of St. Dominic through the antiphon O Lumen Ecclesiae allows him to convey the holiness of this saint while simultaneously promoting such a practice of virtue in our own lives. With this twofold achievement, the book offers insightful lessons in both theology and history. As a student at a Dominican college, I was delighted to read such an edifying work on the founder of an order devoted to study whose current members have greatly enriched my own education. The Timeless Dominic can be enjoyed and appreciated by reading groups, theology and catechism classes, and all members of the Church in their pursuit of the Truth.

The O Lumen Ecclesiae is one of the most beautiful hymns that I have ever had the privilege to hear sung and to find a book of this caliber that reflects so beautifully on this ancient hymn and the life that it presents of Saint Dominic is a true gift. Having been educated in the Dominican tradition, I particularly appreciate The Timeless Dominic in which Father Richard T.A. Murphy, O.P. offers the Church such a great resource on a saint whose pursuit of Truth and zeal for souls is a crucial message to be shared among all the faithful at this time.

The beauty of this book's illustrations is matched only by the warmth and wisdom of the author's reflections on the gift to the Church and to all of us that was and is St. Dominic and the Order of Preachers, all achieved in the context of an amazingly fruitful mining of a most brief, profound, and luminous prayer. The Timeless Dominic is a timeless gem to be read, re-read, and shared with family and friends.

The Timeless Dominic is an engagingly written meditation on the life and significance of St. Dominic, as seen through the lens of the O Lumen. Murphy's language is clear, humble, and refreshingly approachable. He eschew's jargon, all while making vivid the novelty and genius of Dominic's idea: that there should be at least some group of religious for whom special permission is not required in order to preach on matters moral and dogmatic. Today we take this idea for granted. When reading the Timeless Dominic, one can almost imagine what it was like to hear it for the first time.I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 because at times it felt a little bit like the author had gotten distracted, and I wasn't entirely sure I understood why the narrative had taken the direction it had. But even then, these were for the most part pleasant detours.
