Engineering Mechanics: Statics & Dynamics 14th Edition

I just finished teaching a Dynamics Class with this book. My Department gave me a copy of the Dynamics book by itself, but I wanted the Statics part too, so I could refer to what the students just learned in Statics. I think that worked out well.I really like this book. It has many examples, many partially solved problems, and some homework problems with answers in the back and some without. That represents a huge amount of work to put that all together. I think about how much work it takes to put together an exam here and there, I can't imagine what it took to accumulate 100s of problems per chapter. Good job.Also, the text was well written and the derivations were straight forward.I can see why this is one of the most popular textbooks for Statics and Dynamics classes.The only weakness I noticed is that some of the problems are not physically realistic. For example, in one problem, we care about the 2kg collar at the end of a 2m linkage, but we ignore the weight of the linkage. Most 2m linkages will weigh more than 2kg, why can we ignore it? And, some of the sizes are really big. Yes, there really are 2m linkages in the world, but most mechanical systems are much smaller than in the problems in the book. It would be more realistic if some problems were in cm-g-s units instead of m-kg-s units. In today's world, students' computers can handle real (and realistic) numbers, we don't need to stick to simple integer values. Perhaps that can be an improvement for the 15th Edition.

Our school requires a different book altogether for Mcgraw Hill, however the book reads horribly and changes the symbols on certain constants so it makes the problems confusing. This book however gives some very good examples and reads really well. I would recommend this to anyone taking Statics and Dynamics as either their main reading or a first up supplemental go to.

Book is in perfect condition. Way more economical than buying both books separately. Has answers for problems. No mastering code, but that's cheap enough to buy separately. Great book for supplementing the class and online homeworks.

Okay, this is a well written engineering textbook. However, after just a few weeks of light desk use, the binding is starting to fall apart and I’m not sure it’s going to be in very good shape by the time I’m done. It started off new and it really seems like they cheaped out on the binding quality with the glue and spine. The pages are very nice though.I like that the author apparently took the time to photograph a lot of the things for explanations and even to use in some of the problems (instead of pulling all stock footage or using drawings). There is a lot of material covered and I felt that some things could use more types of worked examples, but on the whole I’m happy with it and I’m glad I finally paid for a hard copy after dealing with a crappy online e-reader I rented it through at first for my Statics class. Being able to flip through real pages looking for stuff is so much more efficient than pressing a button and waiting five seconds for the page to turn or maybe log you out. The disadvantage of the real book is that it’s big, expensive, and heavy. I really wish buying the textbook would give you (legal) access to a pdf of the book.

If you need the statics book you'll need the dynamics book just get them together

I used to the book for a class and it was cheaper to get it from Amazon than anywhere else

Even though I bought this book outright on here, either amazon or hibbler will only let me read it on 2 devices. This is idiotic, why does it matter how many devices I read it on if they are all my devices? "oh but you can buy another license in order to view it on more" no. I own the book, let me read it. It's predatory towards poor college students and these people wonder why this stuff is pirated so often.
